SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,328, dated July 4, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL JAcKsoN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in .Frictional Clutches, of which the following, taken in Connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to frictional clutches.
My object is to produce such a clutch having double frictional contact, cheap and durable in its construction, and of great utility; and to that'end my invention consists in several new and novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed.
It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in Which Figure 1 is a side View of the frictional clutch. Fig. 2 is a section thereof on the line w, Fig. 1, except that the shaft is shown in full.
a is the shaft, to which is rigidly secured the spider a, said spider having its arms extending, as shown, and provided with a rim a".
b is a gear mounted loosely upon the shaft, having a flange 0 extending within the rim a upon the arms of-the spider:
To the rim of the spider is secured at one end the spring-band cl, as shown, and having its opposite end secured to the swinging arm 6, as shown at d. v
e is a swinging arm pivoted upon the hub 1, which hub is mounted on the shaft a.
e is a lever pivoted upon the swinging arm 6 by means of the post 2, to which it is rigidly connected, to the arm of which post ispivotally secured the frictional band f, as shown at 3, and having its outer face covered with leather, as shown at 4.
g is a sliding cone provided with means for operating it upon the shaft aand allowing the beveled end g to come into engagement with the pin h. It will thus be seen that by pushing the cone into engagement with the pin h the free end of "the lever e" is thrown out, thereby rolling the post 2, which has an arm 2 extending into the free end of the band f, the opposite end of" the band f being secured to the swinging arm 6, to which also the free end of the band dis attached, expanding the band f, so that it comes into frictional contact with the fiange c of the gearb, causing said gear I) to rotate.
When the lever e is rotated and expands the band f, the swinging arm 6 moves slightly outward,thereby expanding the band f,whicl1 is provided with a leather lining 4, causing it to grip and come into frictional contact with the inner face of the flange c of the gear, and this movement causes the swinging arm 6 to move toward the fixed end of the band (1, carrying the opposite free end of said band with it, and thus cause it to grip it and carry the loose gear with it. Both friction-bands are therefore brought into'engagement with the friction-rim by a single movement of the lever e. i i

A frictional clutch comprising a spider mounted upon a shaft and forming a partial rim, a'gear mounted loosely upon the shaft and having a flange extending within the said rim, a swinging arm mounted loosely on the hub of said spider, a friction-band having one end secured to said rim and its other end secured to the end of said swinging arm, and
' surrounding said flange on the gear-wheel, a
small shaft mounted in said arm parallel to the main shaft having an outwardly-extendingextremity, a friction-band located just inside said flange of gear-wheel having one end secured to said swinging arm and the other end connected to s'aid-outwardly-extending extremity of small shaft, an arm secured to the other extremity of said small shaft, and a cone sliding on main shaft and bearing on free end of said arm mounted on said small shaft, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
