CHARLES RANDELL HOLLIS, OF PITTSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS. v
GARMENT FASTENER AND SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,046, dated February 19, 1889.
Application filed November 10, 1888- Serial No. 290,425. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES RANDELL HOLLIS, of Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Garment Fastener and Supporter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to supporters for supporting childrens drawers and stockings from the waist.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved device for conveniently supporting childrens garments, such as drawers and stockings, at the same time permitting an easy opening and closing of the seat of the drawers.
'lhe-invention consists in certain parts and details and combinations of the same,as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the imprm'ement as applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the improvemei'lt, parts being broken out.
The improved fastener and supporter is provided with a pair of levers, A and B, pivoted together at their lower ends at C, and of which the lever A is made in the shape of a casing, into which swings the lever B when the lovers are closed. The back of the casinglever A forms a spring, D,which presses with its free end on the back and lower edge of the leverB at the pivotD in a similar manner to the spring in a pocket-knife on the knifeblade. On the upper end of the lever A is secured a hook, E, adapted to hook onto a button, F, fastened on the waist, so as to support the device from the latter. 011 the spring-back of the lever A are secured a number of loops, I-I, extending horizontally to the front and adapted to fasten onto the front part of the drawers I by clamping a part of the drawers in the loop in the usual manner. On the lever B are secured a number of loops, J, similar to the loops H and extending in opposite direction from the latter. The loops J are adapted to be fastened onto the sides of the seat K of the drawers I. On the lower end of the lever A is secured a staple, L, through which is passed an elastic band, N, provided on each downwardly-hanging end With a loop, 0, similar to the loops H and J, and serving to clamp parts of the upper ends of the stockings P to hold the latterin place.
Two devices, as above described, and placed one on each side of the childs body, are necessary to properly support the drawers I and stockings 1. Each device is hung by the loop E onto a button,F, of the waist G. Then when the drawers are put on the loops H are fastened to the front of the drawers I, and the hooks Jon the closed lever B are secured to the seat K. By this means the drawers are properly supported, and when it is desirable to open the seat K of the drawers I, then the operator (which may be the child or guardian) pulls on both levers B or loops J rearwardly, so as to open the lovers into the position shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2. opening of the levers I3 opens the seat very fully and quickly, and is held open by the spring D pressing on the lever B near its pivot C.
The seat K of the drawers is very quickly closed by swinging the levers B upwardly into their former closed position. It is understood that the springs D assist in fully opening and closing the levers B.
\Vhen the two devices are in place, as above described, then the loops 0 of the elastic bands Nare secured to the stockings P,whereby the latter, with the drawers I, are supported by my devices from the waist G.
It will be seen that when the child stoops down or bends up the spring-back D will permit the jointed levers A. and B to slightly open and close, thus permitting an easy and free movement of the childs body and without any strain on the drawers and the loops Hand J of the levers A and B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. I11 a garmeld-fastener, two levers pivoted together at their lower ends, the forward lever having a suspension device at its upper end, and both levers having fastenings or attaching devices whereby they may be secured This levers in their closed positions, substantially as set forth.
2. Acombincd garment-fastener and stocking-support consisting in two lovers pivoted together at their lower ends and there provided with a depending stoeking-support, a suspension device at the upper end of the forward lever, a sprin holding the levers in their closed position, and means for securing the front and rear levers to the drawers along the front and rear edges, respectively, of their side openings, substantially as set forth.
3. A garment fastener and supporter comprising a jointed pair of levers carrying a spring and adapted to be supported from the waist, and loops extending from the backs of the said levers on opposite sides and adapted to be fastened to the front part and seat of the drawers, substantially as shown and described.
4:. A garment fastener and supporter comspring, a loop held on the upper end 01' one of the said levers to support the device from the waist, and loops extending from the backs of the said levers on opposite sides and adapted to be secured to the front part and seat of the drawers, substantially as shown and described.
5. A garment fastener and supporter C0111- prising a jointed pair of levers carrying a spring, a loop held on the upper end of one of the said levers to support the device from the waist, and loops extending from the backs of: the said levers on opposite sides and adapt ed to be secured to the front part and seat of the drawers, and an elastic hand held on the lower end of one of the levers and carrying prising a jointed pair of levers carrying a at each end a loop adapted to be fastened to the stocking, substantially as shown and described.
