Description

B. OOHN.
EAR PROTECTOR.
No. 397,583. Patented Feb. 12, 1889.
Ira/ador- N. PETERS. hnlcLvlhcgrapher. wa-mn wn. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OrrieE.
REUBEN ("'OHN, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
EAR-PROTECTQR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 397,583, dated February 12, 1889.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, REUBEN OHN, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, and a resident of New York, in. the county of New York and Stateof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ear-Protectors adapted for Application to Collars, Caps, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for protect- .ing the ears in cold weather; and its object is to combine with any article of ladies or gentlemens wear adapted to receive the same such, for instance, as collars, caps, capes, and eloaks-earn'oteetors that may be brought into position to cover the ears, and when not desired for such use the same may be removed from contact with the ears and then serve as a finish or ornamentation for the article to which they may be applied.
The novel features for which protection by Letters Patent is desired are set forth in the claims at the end of this description.
To enable others interested in the art to understand and make use of my invention, I will proceed to describe the same, having reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this description, and in which like figures of reference indieatclike parts in the several views.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a side ele vation of the bust of a man, ilhistrating the ap jdication of my invention to a fur collar. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a fur collar or capband in which my improvements are embodied. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a cap, showing the manner of applying the invention thereto. Fig. 1 is an edge view of one of the hinged spring devices, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawings, 6 designates a fur collar or band of the usual form, and 7 the earprotecting pieces, which may be formed integral. with the collar or band, or may be sewed thereon.
In ap llying the invention to caps and to ladies fur garments of various kinds the earprotecting pieces will be so shaped and at tached to the garment as not to be unsightly or bulky when removed from contact with the ca rs.
The spring device 8 is made, as shown in Application filed May 2, 1888. Serial No. 272,611: (No model.)
Figs. 1 and 5, witha two-part vertical member, 9, embodying the spring-joint 10, and with a curved member, 11, formed integral with or secured to the top of the upper part of vertical member 9.
The several parts of the spring device 8 will be perforated, in, order that the device may be secured by sewing to the lining of the garment to which it is applied, and thus prevent its displacement when in use.
The hinge-joint of the spring device 8 is constructed as shown in Fig. 4-, its leading peculiarity being its simplicity. The part 12 of the vertical member 9 is broadened, as at 13, and its center cut away, the ends of the two arms thus produced being '1 urned over to term bearings for the journals 1%, which are secured to or formed integral with one end of the other part, 15, of the vertical member 9. The journals 1t are located a short distance above the extremity of part 15, whereby a lug, 16, is provided which co-operates with the elastic device 17, the same being of steel and being riveted at an appropriate point to the part 12. a
The elastic device 17 may be of one or two parts. As shown, it comprises two pieces, one of which, 18, has its free end bent so as to bear against the part 15, and it co-operates with the lug 16 when folding the spring device 8, while the other piece, 19, has its free end bent so as to press against 18 to i n crease the strength of the spring-action.
Thedotted lines of Fig. -l are employed merely to enable the construction and operation of the spring device to be more clearly understood.
The curved member 11 of spring device 8 projects outward from the vertical member 9 and curves downward at each side of said vertical member in such manner as to provide when covered a concave surface, which is adapted to fit snugly over the car when the protector is in use.
The end 20 of the vertical. member 9 may be secured by rivets or otherwise to the metallic piece 21, whose ollice is to give shape to the collar; but piece 21 is not essential to the operation of the invention, as the spring devices may be sewed directly to the lining without the employment of any stiffening mediuin, and that plan will be adopted when the invention is applied to collars or caps, which it may be desirable sometimes to put in the overcoat pocket.
The manner in which my invention is used is plain from the foregoing description. hen the ear-protectors are turned upin doing which the spring device 8 is unfolded against the tension of the s1nring-joint 10the curved member of said spring device snugly surrounds the car without exerting undue pressure thereupon, and thus holds the protectors in position, so that the movcnneni s of the body of the wearer and strong winds are notliable to displace the same. The spring devices are very light, and hence add no material weight to the garment to which they may be applied.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. As an improvement in folding ear-pmteetors, a spring device consisting oi? a hinged vertical member having an elastic appliance secured thereto, against the tension of which said hinged vertical member is adapted to fold, and provided at one of its ends with a rigidly-fixed curved member which projects outward and downward at both sides of said vertical memben'and which when covered provides a concave surface adapted to snugly it over the ear, substantially as set forth.
2. As an improvement in folding ear-protectors, a spring device embodying a vertical member consisting of two parts, 12 and 15, one of which, 12, is broadened, as atv 13, and has its center cut away, the ends of the'two arms thus produced forming j ournal-bearings, as shown, and the other part, 15, provided vwith journals 14: and lug 16, and an elastic device, 17, secured to part 12 and co-operating with lug 16, substantially as set forth.
3. A garment for ladies or gentlemens wear provided with an ear-protecting attachment consisting of a pair of spring devices, each eomprisin g a single vertical member having an elastic appliance secured thereto and hinged near its center, so as to fold backward or downward. against the tension. of said elastic appliance and provided at one end with a rigidly-fixed curved member which projects outward and downward at both sides of said vertical member and provides a concave sur- Face adapted to snugly lit over the ear, substantially as set forth.
4. A garment for ladies or gen-tlemens wear provided with an ear-protecting attachment consisting of the metallic piece 21, which gives shape to the garment, in combination with a pair of spring devices appropriately secured to said garment-shaping piece and each consislin ot' a hinged vertical member provided at one of its ends with a curved member which projects outward and downward at both sides of said vertical member, substantially as
