Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TUG-BUCKl- ES Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,734, dated September 1, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, NELsoN H. HOWARD, of the city of Beloit, county of Rock, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement on a Tug-Buckle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construe tion and of the operation ot' the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this amended specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the buckle with my improvementapplied. Fig. 2 is a view of the edge of the trace or tug which is used with and in connection with the improvement to said buckle. Fig. 3 is a view of the whole trace or tug, representing the rise or swell in the tug, which bears against my iinprovement--to wit, the roller or bar passing through the buckle in place of and substitute for a tongue. Fig. 4 is a view of the buckle with the improvement attached, showing the bar or roller and the lever against which the tug or trace bears. Fig. 5 isa view of the buckle, representing the edge view of the bar or roller and the lever.
In the several figures the same part of the buckle and improvement is represented by the same letter.
A represents the roller or bar against which the swell in the tug (marked O) bears in connection with the lever B, thus holding the tug fast between the said bar and lever. This may be fast or roll in the buckle.
`Letter B represents the lever passing under the tug, and presses against it more firmly as the tug is drawn tighter by any power.
Letter C represents the rise and swell in the tug, which is made by leather or other substance being formed in the construction of the tug, being of the form of a wedge.
The design and effect of this improvement is to save the tug or trace entire and save the necessity of cutting a hole in the tug or trace for a tongue of any kind. Its operation is to press against the tug or trace as it passes between the lever on the under side and the roller or bar ou the upper or outer side of the tug, bringing the tug at the point of the rise or swell firmly against the roller or bar, and the greater the strain or `draft upon the tug, the rmer the tug at this point presses against the roller or bar.
And I, NELSON H. HOWARD, claimas my ,invention- The lever, as above specied, as applied to and in combination with the roller or bar, and the rise and swell in the tug, as above represented.
N. H. HOWARD.
