Description

0. BRELSFORD;
Shovel-Plow.
Patented Jan. 5. 1864.

N.PETERS; PH
UNITED STATES PATENT EEIeE.
M. G. BRELSFORD, OF (HEARD, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOW BEAMS AND HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,056, dated January 5, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, M. G. BRELSFORD, of Girard, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1. represents a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of. reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a plow-stock, the beam and handles of which are made of one piece of wood in such a manner that the whole plow can be made without requiring a single mortise, and a simple, cheap, and durable plow-stock can be produced.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and use my invention, 1 will proceed to describe it.
A represents the beam, and B the handles, which are made, with the beam, out of one piece.
The manner of stocking is as follows: I take a piece of timber of the desired size and length and shave the end intended for the handles to the proper size. I then steam and bend it to suit convenience or fancy. When this operation is accomplished I iipin the properlength for the handles and spread them apart the proper width, as clearly shown in the drawings.
A cross-bar, (6, steadies the handles, and a standard, 0, is fitted in the slot between the handles and secured by means of a bolt, b, which also prevents the handles splitting tarther into the beam than desirable. A brace, 0, serves to steady the standard in the usual manner.
This improvement is applicable to plowstooks of anydeseription whatever, and it enables an ordinary mechanic to stock two or three plows in the same time which it takes to stock one in the ordinary manner. My plow-stock requires less material than one of the ordinary construction, and when finished it is stronger, lighter, and more durable.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A plow-stock having the beam A and the handles B made outof one piece of wood, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth.
I M. O. BRELSFORD.
