Description

i l @uiten tutre @anni @frn HIRAM SLOOP, OF MOUNT HEALTHY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JEPTHA GARRARD, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
Letters .Patent No. 73,933, dated January 28, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN HILL-SIDE PLOUGES.
T0 WHOM IT MAY OONOERN:
A Be it known that I, HIRAM SLOOP, of Mount Healthy, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a. certain new and useful Hill-Side Plough; and d hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof,'reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this speelcation.
My inventionV relates to the class of'hilhside ploughs which :1ro susceptible of: adjustment for alternate right und left-hand ploughing in succession, and is so arranged that the reversal is effected bythe simple act of swinging the beam without disturbing the plough in tho furrow.
#Fgure 1 s a perspective View of my plough, in. position for right-hund ploughing, except that the beam is unlocked.
Figure 2 is a side elevation, showing the benin in position for left-hand ploughing, and rmly locked to the plough proper. v
Figure 3 is a top view thereof, thc beam being released and partly swung around.
In the above ligure portions of the stock are removed, so ns to expose the working parts.
My plough proper consists of two ordinary bnr-shares, A A, right and left respectively, united back to L back, so as to have their lend-sides flush with each other, and their points cliametrically from each other. A fishiplate, B, unites the two land-side bars to each otherend to a lend-side plate, O, and another heh-plate, D, attaches together the two mould-boards. Extending upward from the ploughs proper are two sheths, E E', made fast toa D-formed swivel-plate, F, connected to the under side of the beam by :t strong king-bolt, G, which bolt also secures the roar end of :t strap or bar, II, which, forming o. loop, 71., around the curved portion of the D, is
t attached to the under side ofthe beaunin front of it, and constitutes a shoulder or abutment against which the sheths alternately press, and hy which, in' connection with :z pair of dogs, I J, suitably notched, z'j, serves to holdthe sheths 'in either position. The seid dogs are pivotefl to the beain at K K', and have their summits conl neoted by rods L L with a Tlformcd lever, M, accessible to theA operator, and adapted to be secured in the locked position by a rack, N. I
The operotion is as follows: The plough having reached the end of the furrow, from the rack N and pushed to the right, so as to release the dogs I J'. The beam is then swung halt' around and locked in its reverse position, and the team started forward on its return trip or through, without disturbing the plough proper, except to guide it into the lend in the common way. i
I claim herein as new, and of my invention- A reversible hillside plough, characterized by two ploughs proper, secured back to back, and provided with a. beam capable of being swung and locked in diztmetricztlly opposite directions, dogs I J, abutment-hsv H, sheths E E', lever M, and rack N, or their equivalents.
` In testimony df which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
the lever M is discharged HIRAM SLOOP.
