CHARLES HENRY XYILSON, OF JERSEY CITY, NElY JERSEY.
AXLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,845, dated January 29, 1889.
Application filed September 12, 1888. Serial No. 285,251. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HENRY \VIL- SON, of Jersey City I-Ieig'hts, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Axle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of the constructiiim, arrangement, and combinations of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanyin drawings, forming" a part of this s tieciiication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of my new and improved axle, and Fig: 2 is a sectional elevation of the same.
A B represent the two main sections of my new axle. These are united by the screwshank A of section A, being; screwed into the intern ally-scrow-threaded cavity 15' 01. the section l-i. The outer surfaces of the central portions of the sections A 15 are screw-threaded, and upon them screwed the coupling sleeve or tube C. This is prevented from movement by the collars a- (I, held in place by set-screw a a. Each section A B is formed with a bearing D D, for the wheel, and back of this hearing is formed the square portion E E, to which a wrench may be applied for separating the sections of the axle. \Vhen constructed in this manner, it one section should break it may be detached from the other and a new section put in place thus obviatingthe necessity of losing the whole axle as would be the case if made in one piece.
Having" thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire 1o secure by Letters Patent,
An improved axle consisting cf the two sections A B, each having their inner ends externally screw-threaded, the section A being' provided with the reduced screntl'1readed portion or shank A and the section B with the intern ally-screw-i'llreadcd. cavity B, to receive the said reduced portion or shank, and the internally-threaded sleeve 0, fitting on the screw-threaded portions of the said sections substantially as herein shown and dc scribed.
CHARLES HENRY WILSON.
