UNITED STATES PATENT @EETCE.
ENGELl-ZERT BREIIER, ()ll CITASKA, MINNESOTA.
WATER-CLOSET-SEAT PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,803, dated January 29, 1889.
Application filed October 18, 1888. Serial No. 288,500. (No model.)
To all 1117107 it may concern.-
citizen of the United States, anda resident of tlhaska, in the county of Carver and State of 1 M1nnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ater-Uloset-Seat Proteeters; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, elea r, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyl i l ing drawings,'forming a part of this specilica- I tion, and to the figures and letters of reference 5 for the seats of water-closets and designed to prevent contact of the person with the surface of the permanent seat, whereby the person of the occupantis protected from contamination by filth and infectious diseases such as are liable to be contracted at public resorts and it consists in the improvedcombination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described and claimed, to form a cheap and simple portable protector, which can be folded into a small compass and adjusted to accommodate the size of the opening in the permanent seat or the posterior dimensions of the individual.
In the ('lccompanyin drawings, Figure 'l is a top plan view showing myimproved protector open and in. dotted lines expanded. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective showing the sections partially folded. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the hinge detached. Fig. 4 illustrates a modified form of hinge.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
The protector s ftjirmed in two sections, A A, each composed of two or more segmental pieces, a 0., of wood or other material, hinged together, as indicated at I, so as to be capable of folding the one upon the other, as indicated in Fig. The pieces o u. are cut or formed in corresponding arcs, so that when folded or assembled together they will assume the form of a package equal in length and width to one of the segments and in thick-- ness to the aggregate of all the sections. The inner ends of the corresponding segmental pieces a of the two sections A A are joined together by hinge 13, whose two leaves, 1), are
" so attaclu-tl or conmwted to the segments (1 as Be it known that l, ENoELeEn'r fllnmmu, a 1
to permit both longitudimtl and lateral adjustment of the sections A A, whereby the interior dimensions of the opening encircled or surrounded by the sections A A can be increased or diminished, and at the same time the folding of the inner segments, (,1, is permitted. ()ne mode of accomplishing thispurpose is illustrated in the drawings, (though, as is obvious, other equivalent means might be emplo ved,) consisting in providing the leaves (1 with arc-shaped slots 1) and the segments o with slots 0 for the reception ofsaid leaves, pins a, passing through the slots 7), serving to hold the leaves in the slots and serving as pivotal points about which the sections A A can be swung. The proximate ends of theleaves are jointed to aninterposed connection, A so that one section, a, can be folded upon the other, this interposed link or connection A accommodating the thickness of the walls of slots c The operation of my improved cover will be readily um'lerstood- For packing and transportation the segments are folded together, as imlicated in Fig. 2, tm-ming a package occupying the minimum space with the several partspermanently secured together, so that they cannot be accidentally separated or mispl: 3cd,an(.l are always in condition for immediate service. In applying the cover, the several segn'lents are unfolded and extended, after \vhichthe sections are adjusted by drawing the segments a more or less apart and swinging the se ments (0 toward each other until the openingin the ')ermai'1ent seat is e11- tirely covered or reduced to the desired dimensions.
\Vhen employed for the acconunodation of very small children or infants, the front end of one section can be drawn so as to overlap the other, thereby materially reducing the size of the opening.
In the modification shown in Fig.5 the form of the con n ecti ng-h ingc is departed from somewhat. 'lheleaves of the hinge, which in this instance are prt'aferably round rods, are simply slipped into sockets inv the sections, thus being permitted only a sliding movement on the leaves. In order now to provide for the pivotal movement of the sections in abort.
zontal plane, the ends of the leaves are loosely connected togetheras, for instance, by a ring, A on which they may have a sliding movement. An arrangement such as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 is, however, preferred, as turnishing a more rigid connection for holding the sections A A in substantially the same plane.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim. as new is- 1. In an adjustablecover such as described, the combination, with the sections A A, of a hinge connecting their proximate ends and a movable pivotal connection between the leaves of the hinge and sections, wherel1 y the sections may be moved loiigitinlimtlly ol the leaves and swung thereon to vary the size ol the opening, substantially as described.
2. In an adjustable cover such as described, the combination, with the arc-shaped sections AA,ot' a hinge having the arc-shaped leaves and adjustable connections between said leaves and the arc-shaped sections, whereby they maybe adjusted in the direction ol their ,tions A A, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
(3. In combination with the arc-shaped sections A A, each formed of two segments hinged together to fold flat, a hinge having the intermediate connecting-link, A interposed between and connecting the proximate ends of said sections, as and for the purpose set forth.
7. In a portable cover such as described, the combination, with the folding sections A A, each provided with a slot, as at 60 of the hingeeonneetion A consisting of two leaves hinged to an intervening link, and each formed with a slot, said leaves being received in the slots in the ends of the sections and held therein by pins passing through the slots, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribingwitnesses.
