UNITED STATES ATENT FFIcE.
CHARLES ll. TRASK, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,378, dated January 15, 1889.
Application filed March 19, 1888. gerial No. 267,597. (No model.)
To aJZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES II. TRASK, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heel or Sole Edge Trimming Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The invention relates especially to an adjustable hood for partly covering the soleedge cutter of the machine, preferably having a rest for the face of the sole, and which has a passage in continuation of a passage in the stationary or fixed part of the machine which communicates with or extends to the exhaustfau; and the object of the invention is to provide a means for the removal of dust, chips, &c., during the trimming operation with equal facility from cutters varying in width.
It further relates to various other details of construction and organization.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of the upper part or head of a machine containing my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the machine. Fig. 3 is a detail view in vertical section, and Fig. t is a detail view in horizontal section, of the hood and cutter.
A represents the post upon which the cutters are mounted, and in the drawings I have represented the invention as applied to a machine having a sole-edge cutter, l and a shank-edge cutter, C.
E is a casting in the form of a box which is bolted by lugs e to the frame of the machine. This box contains a passage, 6, which is closed in part by the frame of the machine and which opens into a passage, 6 extending to the chamber containing the exhaust-fan. The box is also shaped to provide the section a through which the shaft operating the soleedge cutter 13 extends, and the section 6 through which the shaft operating the shank edge cutter 0 extends, and each of these sections 6 e' is provided with a front opening The opening 6 to the section a is well represented in Fig.
1. This section is made in one piece. In other words, it is not adjustable and it has an extension, e, which projects over the shankedge cutter. (See Fig. l.) The opening 6 to the section e5 is represented in Fig. 4. This section extends outward from the casting in the form of a sleeve and receives the adjustable hood F, whichis of a size and length to slide upon the sleeve c and to also extend over and about the sole-edge cutter B, as represented in Figs. 1 2, 3, and This hood has a solid part, f, in which is formed a hole, f, through which the shaft/"' extends, and thereby acts as a support for the hood. The
hood has also an upward-extending arm, f
(see Fig. 1,) which has a hole which receives the rod 1*, upon which it is adjustable. The rod has a screw-thread, fZ-formed upon it, and by means of check-nutsf the arm, and therefore the hood, may be adjusted and locked stationary in any desired position in relation to the cutter B. The hood has its outer end, F, reduced in size, so that the outer edge extends closely to the welt-knife of the cutter and forms a narrow passage, g, about it, except, of course, where cut away atg' to permit the sole-edge to be presented to the cutter. This construction provides two important resultsfirst, it makes a barrier against which the chips thrown from the cutter by its centrifugal action are arrested, so that they are more readily influenced by or controlled by the suction of the exhaust, and, second, by reducing the size of the entrance about the cutter the strength of the air-suction at that point is very materially increased. There is also formed upon the hood the sole-edge rest f (see Fig. 4,) which of course is adjustable or movable with the hood, and the inner curved edge, f of which acts as a finger support or rest. \Vhen a sprin g-h eel is employed, the hood is further provided with a recess; f, (see Figs. 1 and 4,) to receive the nuts f by which the rest f is made movable in relation to the sole-rest f. The spring-heel. edge-rest is like that described in my patent No. 380,009 dated April 3, BBS-that is, it comprises a rod the end-of which is movable toward and from the face of the rest f but is only brought into such position and used in trimming edges of spring-heels. At all other times it is moved backward out of the way, leaving no projection upon the face of the rest f Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination, in a sole or heel edge trimming machine, of a rotary cutter with a hood containing a passage connecting with a passage extending to an exhaust-chamber and horizontally adjustable by means substantially as specified, as and for the purposes 1 described;
2. The combination of the box or casing having a section of the escape-passage, the section 2*, hzwing an opening, c, the hood F, the rod f, the supporting-arm f the nuts f and the cutter B, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the hood F, having the section f, provided with the hole f, to fit the shaft f the cutter l3, and devices for moving the hood horizontally upon the shaft, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the hood F, ad j ustable horizontally in relation to the opening to the dust-escape passage, the cutter B, and a sole-edge rest, f formed upon or attached to said hood and horizontally movable therewith, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the hood. F, horizontally adjustable in relation to the cutter B and having a recess, f", the spring-heel edgerest f supported by said hood, and the adjusting-nuts f held in said recess f substantially as described.
(5. The combination of the shank-edge cutter 0, with the box or casing havinga section, e", provided with an opening, 6, and an extension, 6 projecting over the cutter, substantially as described.
7. The combination of the shank-edge cutter (1, the sole-edge cutter B, the box E, having the passage communicating with the exhaust and provided with the section 6 having the opening 6" in proximity to the shankedge cutter C, and the section 6 having the adjustable or movable sleeve provided with an opening in proximity to the sole-edge cutter B, substantially as described.
8. The combination of the cutter .B and the hood F, having the opening g, and the end F, drawn in or reduced in size to provide the narrow opening 9 between it and the cutter, and forming a narrow passage of uniform width about the cutter, substantially as described.
