HEEL-TRIMMING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,230, dated August 21, 1888.

Be it known that I, CHARLns H. TRASH, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of *Massachusetts a citizen of the United States,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boot and Shoe Heel Trimming Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciication, in explaining its nature.
The invention is an improvement upon that described in my patent, No. 357,743, dated February l5, 1887; and it relates especially to the peculiar form of top-lift-edge-guide, to the manner of adjusting it in relation to the cutter, to the peculiar form of top-lift rest employed and its relation to the top-lift guard and cutter, and also to the forni and construction of the exhaust-passage and its connection with the trimmer; also, to a hinged hood used to partially cover the trimmer and also form a part of the exhaust-passage; also, to the arrangement in aduplex machine of the exhaustpassages and their connection with a common chamber in the frame of the machine containing an exhaustfan.
The invention further relates to other details of construction and organization which will be hereinafter described.

Each of the cutters B B comprises a central block, B2, (see Fig. 7,) having dovetail tongues B3, which are undercut at their ends b, and to which are secured the blades b', each 0f which has a dovetail recess to fit the dovetail tongue and to extend under the end b, and a screw fastens the blade to the dovetail in this position. The cutting-edge of each blade bears a tangential relation to the block B`l and projects from each side thereof, as represented in Fig. 4. This forms between the cutting-edge b2 of each blade and the back edge, b3, of the next blade in order a cross cavity or mouth, b", and I utilize these cross-cavities for the top-lift edgerest, guide, or gage D for the top lift by arranging thereon a block, D', having a hole, d, about which there may be formed a screwthread, d', and having also the arms or extensions d2, each of which has a curved end or surface,d3,which is adapted to partly fill one of the mouths b, in which they are also movable transversely the cutter. Each section d is of such shape that it covers or masks the portion ofthe cutting-edge of the blade b with which it is in line, so that so much of each blade as is covered by a section of the top-lift guide is inoperative, and the edge ol' the top lift can thus be pressed or rested against such portions of the blades of the cutter as are thus protected or shielded. This guide-block. D is supported upon the shaft a, which may have a screw-thread, d, (see Fig. 3,) upon which the block is adapted to be screwed for adjusting its position in relation to the cutter and in relation to the rand-trimmer E and the randguide E', to vary the length of the mouths If, and consequently of the cutting-edges of the blades b; or the block D' may be iitted to the shaft to slide thereon (see Figs. 9 and l0) and to be moved by the heel-tread rest,with which it is connected. In this event the block has IOO the hub or extension d5, having a groove, d6, which receives the connecting yoke plate or piece d?, which is bolted to the block carrying the heel-tread rest to be movable therewith, so that the act of moving the heel-tread rest by the heel shall also automatically move the toplift edge-rest D in relation to the cutter. A spring, d8, upon the cutter-shaft bears against the block D and serves to throw and hold it outward against the pressure of the heel, and the top-lift edgeguideis thusalwaysin position for operation in connection with heels of any height. Of course the guide D can be attached to or connected with any othermoving part adapted to be moved by contact of the tread of the heel to be trimmed therewith. The block b, which supports the blades b', has a hole which receives the end ofthe shaft a, and it is adapted to bear against the shoulder e upon said shaft and to be locked against the same by means of a nut, c', which screws upon the end of the shaft and bears against the disk E, the outer edge of which formsthe rand-guide E. By this construction of trimmer-name] y, by a construction that provides the mouths b-and by the employment of a top-lift edge-rest which rotates with the trimmer and covers or masks the sections of the cutting-edges of the blade which it is not desired to use two desirable results are obtained, first, a very effective topliftedge-guide is obtained, and, second, the heel-blank can be trimmed closely to the top lift without, however, removing any part.. of the lift unless desired.
The placing of the top-lift edge-guide upon the cutter enables me to employ in connection with the rand-guide in presenting the heel to the cutter a heel-side rest, F, and the treadrest G, against which the tread of the heel is adapted to bear in compressing the side edge to the cutter. The heel-side rest F is like in all respects that described in my patent, No. 357,743, and is supported by the movable block G to be horizontally movable on the line of the axis of the cutter. The tread-rest G is like that described in my patent, No. 357,743, excepting that it is unprovided with the lip to form the rand-guide. It is secured to the block G', which is horizontally movable in relation to the cutter, and which is formed on the end of the arm g, which is supported by the rod C, and which is in all respects substantially like that described in my said patent-that is, it is mounted or held so that it is laterally movable along the side of the rotating cutter to vary the operative length thereof, or that part between the rand-guide and it-and it is guided in this movement by a cam or pattern, which governs or controls its radial relation to the center of the cutter as it is moved, so that its inner edge is always maintained at its working-point at thesame distance from the edge of the cutter regardless of its lateral position in relation to the rand-guide or to the curve of the cutter Its relation to the cutter andto the arm and block -for supporting it and cam or patternv for guiding it, as well as its relation to the heel-side rest F, is well shown in Figs. 8, 9, and 10, where g is an arm supporting the cam or pattern g2, and g an arm extending from the movable block G, arranged to rest upon the cam or pattern g2. The heel-side rest F is snpported by an arm, g4, which projects from the movable block G. One or more springs are interposed between the block G and a stationary abutment to act to move the same toward the rand-guide E and to resist the inward movement of the tread-rest and top-lift edgeguide, and to maintain the tread-rest in contact with the tread of the heel.
I would say that it is not necessary that the tread-rest G have a radial movement in relation to the cutter, as above specified; and I would further say that for trimming certain grades of straight heels the top-lift edgeguide D does not need to be made automatically adjustable or to be controlled as to its position by the height of the heel; but for most work it is desirable that it shall be made automatically adjustable by being connected with some moving partof. the machine against which the tread of the heel is brought into contact.
Each cutter is arranged at the upper end of an exhaust-passage,` I'I. (See Figs. 1, 2, and 3.) rFhis passage is formed by the casting h, bolted to the post A', and gradually increases in size and opens into a chamber, 7L', (shown in dotted outline, Fig. 1,) and in which is an exhaust-fan, h2, also shown in dotted outline. The casting is cut away at h3 (see Fig. 1) to permit the hood h, which is pivoted at h5 to the movable arm g, to swing down and cover the cutter, excepting the part immediately in front of the heel-rest, and to thereby form a close compact boxing or covering forreceiving the chips or dust as they are cut from the heel and guide them into theexhaust-passage H', and also by its small size to provide for a very powerful suction close to the cutter.
It will be observed that the hood ,hL is secured to the arm g and is movable laterally therewith in relation to the cutter; also, that the heel-side rest, the heel-tread rest, and the top-lift edge-guide are simultaneously movable laterally in relation to the cutter and to the rand-guide E.
While I have illustrated the invention as applied to a duplex heel-trimming machineV having a duplex cutter, Iwould say that it is applicable to any heel-trimming machine having cutters formed with mouths or recesses b4 extending across the same in front of the cutting-edges of the blades. 1

prefer that there be used in addition to the rand-guide E' a counter-guide, E2, which is concentric With the rand-guide, but smaller than it, and is formed upon the disk E. I also prefer that the rand-trimmer be formed upon the blades b', to be integral therewith, and to rotate with the cutter.
lt will be seen that by making the tongues B, which hold the blades b', with the undercut forward ends, I), and the blades to fit this section of the tongues, the blades are held down to the block quite close to their cuttingedges, a very desirable feature ofconstruetion; also, that the rotary trimmer having cross recesses or mouths b4 and the rest D, for masking or shielding sections of the cutting-edges of the knives or blades of the trimmer, may be used for trimming sole-edges or for any other purpose where it is desired to vary the length of the cutting-edge ofthe cutter or to change it.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States- 1. ln a heel-trimming machine, the combination of a rotary cutter having the crossmonths bA1 with a top-lift edge-rest block, D', sections of which extend into said mouths, the outer edges of which sections are ilush or substantially linsh withthe cutting-edges of the cutters and form the top lift edge-rest D,as and for the purposes described.
2. In a heel-trimming machine, the combination of a rotary cutter having` the mouths or erossreeesses b" in front of the cuttingedges thereof with the top-lift edge-rest block D',havingsections extendingr into said mouths, and the outer surfaces of which are substantially iush with the portions of the cuttingedges of the cutter with which they are in line and form a top-lift edge-rest, D, which block D' is adjustable lengthwise the cutter to vary the length ot' the cutting-sections thereof, as and for the purposes described.
3. The combination, in aheel-trimming machine, ofa rotary cutter having the cross recesses or mouths b, the rand cutter or cutters E, integral with the blades of the cutters, and the rotary top-lift edge-rest block D', having sections which extend into said months or reecsses to shield er mask sections ofthe cuttingedges of the cutting-blades, the outer surfaces of which form a toplift edge-rest, D, substantially as described.
4. rlhe combination, in a shoe-trimming machine, of a rotary duplex cutter having blades er knives of a length to provide two cutting edges or sections, whereby it is adapted to be used with one section as a right trimmer and with the other section as a left trimmer, and having cross recesses or mouths b* in front-of the cutting edges or blades ot' the knives, with the rotary top lift edge-rest block D', having sections extending into said mouths or recesses to mask or shield the unused section of the blades or knives, the outer surfaces of which section form the top-lift edge-rest D, as and for the purposes described.
5. In a trimming-machine for boots and shoes, the combination of a block, B2, having dovetail tongues B, and the dovetail recess b at the forward end of each tongue, with the blades b', having dovetail recesses to fit the dovetail tongue, and undercut recesses to receive the undercut ends b ot' the tongues B, as and for the purposes described.
6. The combination, in a trimming-machine for boots and shoes, of the rotary cutter having the cross recesses or mouths b, the edgerest block D',having sections to mask or shield portions of the cutting-edges of the knives or blades of the cutter, and an abutment or rest connected with the said top-lift edge-rest and located in a posit-ion to be moved by the work which is presented to the action ofthe cutter, whereby the position of the edge-rest is automatically varied during the rotation of the trimmer, substantially as described.
7. The combination, in a boot and shoe trimming machine,ofa rotary trimmer having cross recesses or mouths b, and the top-lift edgerest D, connected with the said trimmer and having sections which act to mask or shield portions ofthe cutting edges or blades of the knives or trimmers, with the heel-tread rest G, substantially as described.

14. The combination, in a boot and shoe trimming machine, of the rotary cutter having blades or knives the cuttingedges of which are longer than the length of the cut which it is dcsired to make or ot' the work which it is de sired to trim, having months or sections b4, and the laterallymovable top-lift edge-rest block D', sections oi' which shield or'mask portions of the cuttingedges of the knives or blades of the cutter, with the tread-rest G, movable lengthwise the axis of the cutter, substantially as described.
15. The combination, in a boot and shoe trimming machine, of the rotary cutter having blades or knives the cutting-edges of which are longer than the length ofthe cut which it is desired to make or of the Work which it is desired to trim, having mout-hs or sections bt, and the laterally-movable top-lift edge-rest block D', sections of which mask or shield portions of the euttingedges of the knives or blades of the cutter, with the heel side rest F, movable lengthwise the axis ofthe cutter, substantially as described.
16. The combination, in a boot and shoe trimming machine, of the rotary cutter having blades or knives the cutting-edges of which are longer than the length of the cut which it is desired to make or of the work which it is de sired to trim, having mouths or sections b4', and the laterally-movable top-lift edge-rest block D, sections of which mask or shield portions of the cutting-edges of the knives or blades of the cutter, with the tread-rest G and heel-rest F, movable lengthwise the axis ofthe cutter, substantially as described.
17. The combination, in a heel-trimming machine, ofthe rotary cutter having cross recesses or mouths b, the rest-block D', adapted to rotate with the cutter and having sections which mask or shield portions of the cutting-edges of. the knives or blades thereof, and the arm g, movable lengthwise the axis of the cutter in opposition to spring-pressure and connected with the rest D, substantially as described.
18. The combination, in a heel-trimming machine, ofthe rotary cutter having cross recesses or mouths bt, the rcst-block D, adapted to rotate with the cutter and having sections which mask or shield portions of the cutting-edges of the knives or blades thereof, the arm g, movable lcngthwise the axis ofthe cutter in opposition to spring-pressure and connected with the rest D, and the tread-rest G and heel-side rest F, carried by said arm, substantially as described.
19. The combination ofthe rotary trimmer having ,the blades b and rand-cutters E, integral with said blades, with the rand-guide E and the counter-guide E2, substantially as described.
20. The combination of the rotary trimmer, the exhaust-passage H, formed by the casting h, which is cut away at h2, as described, the arm g, movable lengthwise the axis of the cutter,and the hinged hood h, attached to said arm o to be movable therewith and to swing upon a vertical are in relation thereto, as and for the purposes described.
21. The combination, in a duplex trimming machine, ofthe cutters B B', the exhaustpassages H, arranged in relation to said cutters, as spccii'ied, and connected with a common chamber containing an air-exhausting fan or device, said chamber and exhaust device, and the hoods 7i, substantially as described.l
22. The combination, in a trimmingmachine, of a rotary trimmer having cross re cesses or mout-hs bt, the rest D, having the hub d5, and groove d", with the movable blockG and the connecting plate or piece di, substantially as described.
