JACOB MAISI-I, OF VARSAlV, INDIANA.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,219, dated January 15, 1889.
Application filed September ll, 1888. Serial No. 285,122. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB MAISH, of \Var saw, county of Kosciusko, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Door Stop, Catch, and Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of door stops and fasteners which are designed to hold a door in an open or closed position, either loosely or looked, as may be required.
The nature of the invention is such that it may also be used as a catch on articles of furnituresuch as book-cases, wardrobes, and cupboards-having either single or double doors, for the purpose of loosely retaining the same in a closed position.
Figure 1 is a plan of my improved device in practical use; Fig. 2, a transverse section in plane 2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3,21 detail and plan of the member attached to and moving with the door; Fig. 4, a plan of the stationary companion member provided with the locking feature; and 5, a view of the same, except the locking feature, which is removed.
In the drawings, A may represent the door, to which the member B is rigidly attached, and A the line of the floor or other stationary part supporting the companion member B. The male member B consists of the head or irregular ring a, the foot-bard, and the arms a connecting the head and foot-bar. This part of the stop is attached by means of the screws a The member B is in the form of a double U-shaped spring made from a single strip of suit-able metal, spring-steel being preferred. The ends of the spring forming the member B are secured some distance apart to the base-block b by means of the screws 17, the outer sides, 12*, of the spring running parallel from the fastening-screws for some ways, as shown, the central part of the strip of steel being bent or curved inward to form the inner sides, h or leaves of the spring and running back between the parallel outer sides. The innerpart of the spring forming the member B is of a curvature corresponding to theis adapted to engage with the lip or swell 61,
formed on the inner side of the ring-head, and thus secure the members B B in a locked position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The ends of the bar C are secured in place by the screws holding the member B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. This lockin g attachment may be used or not or wholly dispensed with, as circumstances require.
The device is not alone applicable for holding doors in an open position, but may be used as a catch as well as a stop for closed doors, and especially screen-doors and the doors of different articles of furniture.
The base-block b, carrying the member B, is secured in place by screws (1 Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a door-check, the combination, with the member B, consisting of the head or ring a, the foot-bar a, and the arms a of the member B, adapted to receive and loosely engage the companion member, and the base-block 1), provided with a raised inclined surface, b substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a door stop and lock, the combination, with the head or ring a, provided on the inner side with a lip or swell, of the bar C, the latch D, and the locking-pin d, engaging with said lip, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JACOB MAISH.
