FORTUNE TELLING PAN.
No. 395,340. Patented Jan. l, 1889.
UNITED STATES aint muon.
VILLAM MCVILLIE, OF CANTON, MISSlSSIPPI.
FORTUNE-TELLING FAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,340, dated January 1, 1889.
Application filed May 2G, 1888i Serial No. 275,136. (No model.)
To all whom, z'z'; 17mg/ concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Moi/VILLIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Madison and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fortune Telling Fans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved fortune-tell.- ing fan; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the fan closed, and Figs. 2 and 3 are side views looking at opposite sides and showing the fan opened.
Referringto the drawings by letter, A A designate the usual side sticks, which are connected by the ordinary pivotpin, B, shown.
C C designate the ribs, which are also connected by the pivot-pin in the ordinary inanner, and D designates the folding web secured on the ends of the ribs, and which has its ends fastened to the ends of the side sticks, as will be readily understood. On the opposite sides or faces of the web I arrange on the folding portions of the same a series of yerses, mottoes, dee., suitable for foretelling the fortune or future of ladies and gentlemen, as shown at E. On one side of the fan are arranged the verses for ladies, and on theopposite side are arranged the verses for gentlemen, and on the proper sides are printed, stamped, or otherwise displayed the vwords Ladys Fortune and Gentlemans Fortune, accompanied by suitable fanciful designs-such as hearts pierced by arrows, bows and quivers, daer-as shown at F. The edges of the inner wider portions of the ribs are provided with notches H, as shown, the said notches increasing in length from one side 0f the fan to the other, so as to display a portion of the subjacent rib, and on this displayed portion l print numerals in successive order, thus forming an index to the verses or fortunes on the web. The indexes on the opposite sides. of the fan are arranged in reverse directions, so as to preserve the strength of the ribs.
The manner of using the device will be readily understood. The person whose fortune is to be told selects a number. The fan is then opened at the number selected, and the verse on the web covering that rib, when read, discloses the persons future lot.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. A fan having inscriptions on its web and having notches in the edges of its ribs provided with an index, as set forth.
2. A fan having inscriptions on its web and notches in the edges of its ribs, said notches increasing in length successively from one side of the fan to the other and provided with an index, as set forth.
3. A fan having inscriptions on both faces of its web and having indexes in both sides of its ribs, the indexes on the opposite sides of the fan extending in reverse directions, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
XVI LLTAM )IOW ILLIE.
