Y M inimummmrmmlnm 7 UNITED STATES PATENT MERLE E. CLINTON, OF IVASI-IINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE SCHLICHT do FIELD COMPANY, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
FILE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 395,312, dated January 1, 1889.
Application filed October 1, 1887. Serial No. 251,213. (No model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,.MERLE E. CLINTON, of \Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain Improvements in File-Boxes,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to that class of tile-boxes in which the papers are confined between the stationary end of the box orreceptacle and a movablefollower or pressure- 10 board therein. Its aim is to improve the details of construction and give to the box in creased rigidity and durability.
In the accompanying (.lrawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a box constructed on my plan. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same.
The body of the box consists of a single plate or sheet of metal bent transversely to produce the flat base a and the vertical end b.
At each side the base has its edge turned upward in the form of a vertical flange, c, which serves the purposes of stiffening the base and of confining the papers against lateral displacement at the lower ends. The front (1 has its edges turned inward, as shown at (Z, in the form of flanges, which are lapped at the lower ends upon and riveted to the base flanges (1, as shown at e.
Two side bars, B, are riveted to the flanges of the front midway of their height or thereabout, and extended thence rearward horizontally, and finally bent down at the rear end and riveted to the flanges c, and also, if desired, to the base. These side bars are com- 5 monly made of rectangular cross-section, as shown, and are of considerable vertical depth, so that they serve as etficient braces to hold the front and base in proper relations.
' 0 represents the follower-board, standing between the side bars and between the flanges 40 c and carried by a cross-bar, I), which rides upon and is adapted to engage with the side bars in any ordinary manner.
\Vooden boxes having the base, front, follower-board, cross-bar, and side guides of the general form and arrangement herein shown are now in common use and are not claimed as of my invention.
My improvement is designed to overcome the weaknesses and structural defects of the existing boxes as developed by my long experience in introducing them to the public, and the invention resides in the construction of the box of metal with the side flanges and with side guides secured thereto. It preferred, 5 5 the two side bars may be formed from a single piece of metal and extended across the t ront, as shown in dotted lines.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. As an improvement in metallic tile-boxes, the flanged base and the flanged end rising therefrom, in combination with the angular side bars attached at one end to the flanges of the front and at the opposite end to the 65 flanges of the base.
2. The improved body for a tilebox, consisting of the flanged front and the flanged base formed in one picce, with the flanges fastcned at the corner, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand, this 98th day of September, 1887, in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
M ERLE E. CLINTON.
itnesses:
W. CLARENCE DUVALL, W. R. KENNEDY.
