GEORGE XV. GARDNER AND CHARLES K. SISCO, OF HOPKINSVILLE, KENTUCKY,
FASTENING FOR END GATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,129, dated December 25, 1888.
Application filed April 24, 1888. Eierial No. 271,655. (No model.)
To all whom it may 0072/007 Be it known that we, GEORGE W. GARDNER and CHARLES K. S1300, both citizens of the United States, residing at'llopkinsville, in the county of Christian and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for End-Gates in \Vagons, of which the following specification is'a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to means for fastening or locking the end-gate when closed and for keeping it from jumping up, and also for holding the sides of the wagon-body together when the end-gate is closed and locked. principle and the best mode of applying the same can most conveniently be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is a partial view, in perspective, of a wagon-body provided with the improved tastenings and having the elul-ga-te closed; Fig. IT, a partial side view of the same with the end-gate open; Fig. 111, a side view, on an enlarged scale, of the plate-si'ipport of one of. 1 the fasteners removed from the wagon-body;
Fig. IV, an end view of the same, and Fig. V aface view of one of the ear-plates to be ongaged by the fasteners.
The end-gate A, hinged at the bottom to the wagon-body in any ordinary or suitable way, is provided at the top with laterallyr projecting ear-plates B, or with other suitable means for engaging the fasteners, which are secured 011 the sides D of the wagrnrbody.
The fasteners comprise each a holding-pin, 1, which projects in the path of the end-gate, at right angles to the same when closed, for engaging one of the ear-plates 13, (or other suitable part of the end-gate,) so as to prevent the end-gate from jumping up and the sides D of the wagon-body from spreading, (or for prevent-in either of those el'l?ects,) and a locking-lmtton, 2, which has a l(3\'01-1ill'l, 3,
whereby it can be turned, for engaging the ear-plate, (or other suitable part,) to prevent 2 As shown, there i the end-gate from opening. is a notch, 4, in the upper edge of each earplate, which notch receives the end of the pin 1 when the end-gate is closed, and the pin 1 forms a rock-shaft, by which the button is operated. As shown, therefore, the pin 1 has Its the double function, first, ot locking the endi gate A and the sides D against transverse motion, or, in other words, of preventing the end-gate from jumping up and the sides from spreading; and, second, of carrying the button 2 and. turning it into and out of locking position.
The invention extends generally to the pinand-button fastenings for the end-gate; but it covers especially the fastenings, wherein the pin has this double function just stated, and it also covers the combination, with the endga-te, of two rock-shafts arranged one on each of the sides D. at right angles to the end-gate when closed, and provided with a button on one end and'an operating lever-arm at the other, whether the end-gate is or is not also prevented from jumping up and the sides from spreading.
The pin 1, in order to form a rock-shaft, is journaled in or on a plate-support, C, and is held from endwise motion. by the abutment 5 opposite the inner end of said shaft or pin. It preferred to form the locking-lnitton 2, the holding-pin 1, (operating also as a rockshat't for the locking-button,) and the operating-arni 3 all in one piece of bent metal, and to form the bearing of pin or shaft 1 by and between two plates, 6 and 7, which together constitute the plate-support C, and the under one of which is provided with the abutment 5. The invention is of course not limited to this preferred construction, but the latter is especially intended to be covered.
We claim as our invention or discovery- 1. In combination with the wagonbody and the end-gate, the improved end-gate fastenings comprising each, first, the holding-pin, which projects parallel with the sides of the 1 wagon-body in the path of the end-gate at right angles to the latter when closed, so as to engage the said end-gate in closing and prevent the same when closed from jumping up and the sides of the wagon-body from spread ing; second, the locking-button, which turns on an axis at right angles to the end-gate when closed and holds the same in that position, and, third, the operating lever-arm, whereby the button is turned into and out of locking position, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the wagon-body and thesides of the wagonbody, and each fastener composed of the plate-support, the rock shaft journaled thereon and arranged at right angles to the end-gate when closed, the button at the rear end of said shaft, and the operating lever-arm and abutment at the 0pposite. end of said shaft, substal'ltially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE \V. GARDNER. CHARLES R. SISCO.
end-gate, the two rock-shafts arranged one on each of the sides of the wagon-body at right angles to the end-gate when closed, the buttons carried by said shafts for locking the 5 gate in the closed position, and the lever-arms for turning said rock-shafts and buttons, substantially as described.
3. The fastener composed of the plate-support, the rock-shaft journaled therein, the button at one end of said shaft, and the operating lever-arm and the abutment at the opposite end of said shaft, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the Wagon-body 15 and end-gate, of the fasteners, one on each of \Vitnesses:
