No. 394,949. Patented Deo. 25, 1888.
@WW1/woo@ L STATES PATENT FFICEa LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,949, dated December 25, 1888.
Application filed July 6, 188B. Serial No. 279,159. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HERMAN ANsHER and BRUNO F. SPRANGER, citizens of the lUnited States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Latches for Doors, of which the following is a speciiication.
The invention relates to improvements in latches for doors, having for its object to pro vide a simple device whereby the door, although held closed against the force of the wind and accidental jars, may be opened by a mere pressure, without the inconvenience of turning a knob or lifting a latch; and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of devices, fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of a door provided with the improved latch. Fig. 2 is a side view of the latch with part of the casing removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line r .fr of Fig. Fig. i is a detail view of the socket-plate.
I {eferring by letter to the drawings, A designates the face-plate ot' the latch, which is provided at its center with a rectangular opening, C; and 'I designates a case, which is aty the opening therein.
D represents a follower, which is mounted in the case, and is provided with the forwardly-projecting arms E E, between which is mounted the roller F, the outer side of which out of order, and the operation of the door to projects through the opening C in the faceplate. rear side with the stem G, on which is coiled the spring H, which bears at its front end against the follower, thereby normally holding the latter extended forward with the The follower is further provided on its outer side ot' the roller projected beyond the -l face-plate.
I represenisa lever, which is provided with lateral trnnnions i i, mounted in vertical slots J J in the sides of the case, whereby the lever may be moved vertically, and the lower end of the lever is provided. with the detent K, which is adapted to engage in either of the notches 7c 71:. The rear end of the spring H bears against the lover below t-he trunnions L' i, whereby the detent K is normally held in engagement with one of the said notches.
L represents an aperture in the lever, which is aligned with the stem G on the follower when the detent K is engaged in the upper notch, 7c; but when the detent is engaged in the lower notch the rear end of the stem abuts against the lever and cannot be repressed.
A key-hole, M, is formed in the side of the lock-case near the upper end of the lever, and when the key is inserted and turned it is adapted to engage the said upper end of the lever, and after repressing it sufficiently to disengage the detent K either raise or lower it, according to whether it is desired to open the lock or secure it against being opened.
The latch N comprises the striking-plate O, which is secured to the casing of the door, and the socket or depression P at the center of the said plate, which is adapted to receive the projecting side of the roller F, and therefore it will be seen that when the door is closed the roller will strike the plate O, and thereby repress the follower against the strength of the spring H, and when the roller aligns with the socket or depression I) it will be forced out by the said spring and engage l therewith. A door provided with the improved latch re tached to the rear side of the said plate over y quires no knob or latch, and is preferably provided on each side with a simple loop-haiidle, Q, which maybe attached in any suitable manner.
It will be seen that the latch is simple, and cannot therefore be readily damaged or put which it is attached is simple, as it requires no manipulation of a knob orsiinilar device. During the day the lever in the latch is allowed to remain in alignment with the stem of the follower, whereby the roller may be repressed by pressingI upon the door, and at night when it is lesired to secure the door against being opened the lever is lowered by means of the key to the locked position described hercinbefore, when the follower cannot be repressed.
The spring. described herein, which operates the follower, may bc made of any desired strength, and is preferably sufliciently strong to require a considerable pressure on the door IOO to open it, so that the wind or an accidental 7 jar or pressure will not disengage the lateh.
Having thus deseribed the invention, we claiml. In a lateh, the combination of the tol" lower provided with a roller on its outer side and a stem, G, on its inner side, thelongitudi- .nally-movable lever provided with an aperture adapted to be aligned with the said stem, and the spring coiled on the stem and bearing at its ends, respectively, against the rear side ol' the follower and the lever, substantially as specified.
2. In a lateh, the combination, with the Ii'ollower provided with the stem (f-l, of the lever provided with lateral trnnnions mounted in slots .l J in the ease, and having a detent, K, to engage suitable notches, 7c k', the lever hein further provided with an opening, L, to register with the rear end of the stem G when the detent K is engaged with the noteli k, and the spring arranged on the stem and bearing on the leverbetween its pivot and the detent K, whereby the detent is normally held in engagement with one of. the notehes, substantially as specified.
3. The herein-described lateh, comprising the ease il, the follower Vmounted in the ease and provided with the Stein (l and the t'orwardly projecting arms E IC, the roller mounted between the said arms, the lever l, having the aperture 'li to reeeive the rear end ot the stem G, and provided. with the lateral trunnions yl' 1', mounted in longitndiintl slots ,l .l in the sides ot' the ease, the detent I( on the lower end otf the lever, adapted to engage notehes /f 7." in the ease, the said ease being provided with a key-hole, M, to enable a key to be inserted to repress the upper end oli' the lever to disengage the detent Vfrom the notches, and the spring (foiled on the stein (l and bearing against the rear side oi? the I 'ollower and the lower arm of the lever l, whereby the detent li is normally held in engagement with one of the notches l; 1.1', sul)- stantially as and -for the purpose speeitieifl.
In testimon)v that we Claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence oi' two witnesses.
