SUMMER-PIECE FOR STOVES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,702, dated December 18, 1888.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN II. KEYSER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concave Summer-Pieces for Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of my invention is to provide a novel style of fire-place recess summer piece, hood, or cell, adapted for the reception of a stove as a substitute for a coal-grate, and the upright central summer-piece, all of which, except the surrounding or finishing framepiece, may have been removed from the fireplace, said recess summer-piece being constructed with a curved body portion, a cap portion of arched and concavcd form, a stovepipe collar to which a stove can be connected, and with a reducible rim or flange of sheetiron, by which it can be fitted to different shapes and sizes of permanently-set finishing frame-pieces ot' fire-places.

The invention, while it enables the house holder to economize the space which the stove would require if set entirely outside the fireplace, adds to the efficiency of the stove for reflecting heat and reduces greatly the cost of fitting a stove to a fire-place; and thus householders at a small cost can have a stove set in a fireplace as a substitute for a removed grate, and, when necessary, have the stove and its summer-piece removed and the grate and its attachments readjusted to the fireplace and to the permanently-set finishing frame-piece of the said fire-place.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved recess summer piece, hood, or cell for stoves. Fig. 2 is a front view showing the permanently-set frame-piece of a grate or fireplace and my recess summer piece, hood, or cell fitted to the fire-place and said frame or finishing piece, and a stove within the recess summer-piece, which stove is designed only for heating the room in which it is situated. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of a fire-place with my invention and a stove applied therein, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of a fire-place and the recess summer-piece on a line below the cap portion of the summer-piece.

A indicates my improved recess summer piece, cell, or hood for stoves, the same consisting of a separate arching and concaved castmetal cap portion l3, surmounting a separate vertical curved cast body portion, a, which is somewhat in the form of a half-cylinder from its upper edge, a, to its lower edge, The cap and body portions are formed with right-angular bolting or riveting flanges e at their outer edges, the body portion being stayed, as at a around its lower edge. The said cap and body portions B and u are provided with a right -angular sheet-metal flange or rim, 6, of considerably greater width than the space which at any time may exist between the jambs and arch or bridge of the fire-place and the edge ot the recess summer piece A, and through this sheetmetal flange or rim 6 and the flanges c of the cap and body portions bolts or rivets a u are passed, and thus the sheet-metal flange, cap, and body portion are firmly united together.

The cap portion B is cast in concave form to exactly correspond with the upper edge, a, of the body portion a, while above such edge it is made arching or of hood shape, so as to form a complete cap or cover for the chamber of the body portion a, as shown in Figs. 1 and :3; and by this construction it is also rendered capable of serving as a reflector to throw the heat of the stove C out into the room when the stove and the recess summerpiece are in place, as indicated in Fig.

The cap B is cast with a front horizontal collar, (1, into or over which the stove-pipe collar p is made to fit snugly when the stove is in place, as shown. To the rear side of the cap, and coinciding with the collard, another collar, (1 of curved or angular form, is applied, this serving to direct the products of combustion upward into the draft-flue D of the chimney D, as shown, and, when desirable, as a means of attachment for an extension draft-pipe.

The horizontal extension of the cap and body portion of the recess summer-piece into the fire-place is not made as great as the horizontal area of the recess of the fire-place, as it is important to leave a space or chamber,

Referring to the description of the sheetiron flange or rim 6, I will now set forth its great utility. This flange or rim, by being made of much greater width than the space between the walls of the fire-place and the cap and body portion of the summer-piece, and

constructed of thin metalas sheet iron or other suitable material of a thickness similar to sheet metal-can with the tinners shears be reduced in width and brought to a shape suited to the recess of either a circular, oval, or square fire-place, and thus when a sum merpiece of given size and shape is carried to a dwelling with all its parts bolted together the workmen will not be compelled, as is often the case, to return to the shop for another summer-piecebecause the one at hand does not suit or fit,bein g either too small or large, or adapted for a square instead of an oval or rounded fire-place. On the contrary, all that is re quired to be done will be to clip off the outer edges of the sheet-iron flange or rim c until of the proper size and form to fit a given size of grate or finishing frame-piece, A, which is already in place, having been left when the I removal of the grate took place.

In this manner I am enabled to make provision for supplying the trade with recess summer-pieces having reducible sheet-metal flanges or rims e, and which can in a very short time and with little expense be adapted forifire-places already furnished with grateframes or finishing-pieces A, thus adapting fire-places previously used with grates for the reception of a stove, C, and saving the expense of new finishing frame-pieces.

In some instances my recess summer-piece may have its 'cap portion, body portion, and bolting-flange e all constructed in one piece and provided with the collar (1 and extensioncollar (1 and when it is thus constructed in one piece the reducible sheet-metal flange or places by shearing down, in the manner hereinbefore described.

\Vhat I claim is 1. The recess summer piece, hood, or cell for a stove, comprising the separate cast-iron flanged cap portion B, of arched and concaveform, inner horizontal stove-pipe collar, d, on portion B, and the separate curved flanged cast body portion a, both of the portions B and a being of less horizontal area than the recess of the fire-place, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The recess summer-piece A, for a stove, comprising the flanged cap portion B, flanged curved cast body portion a, inner collar, (1, and bolted sheetmetal reducible flange or rim 6, substantially as-and for the purpose described.

3. The recess summer-piece A, comprising the cast-iron flanged cap portion B, of arched and concave form, the flanged curved metallic body portion a, the inner stove-pipe collar, (Z, and the outer upturned collar, (Z both applied to the cast-iron cap portion, and the sheet-metal reducible flange or rim 6', substantially as for the purpose described.

4. The recess, summer-piece A, for a stove, comprising the flanged cast-iron cap portion B, and flanged curved metallic body portion a, both made of less horizontal area than the recess of the fire-place, and provided with col-.

5. The recess summer-piece A, for a stove, comprising the flanged cast-iron cap portion B, and flanged curved body portion a, both made of less horizontal extension than the recess of the fire-place, and one portion provided with collars (Z (1* one of said collars being horizontal and the other vertical, substantially and for the purpose described.
