I UNITED STATES HENRY KENDALL,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF XENIA, OHIO.
COMBINED LATCH AND LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,701, dated December 18, 1888.
Application filed April 20, 1888.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY KENDALL, of Xenia, in the county of Greene and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Combined Latch and Look, of which the fol lowing isa full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in combined latches and locks, and has for its object to produce a durable and simple device wherein the latch may be manipulated only from the knob-spindle, and wherein two locking-levers are employed to securely maintain the latch in a locked position.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a lock with one plate of the casing removed. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on line w m of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of the latch.
The lock-casing 10 is provided with an aperture, 11., at one end, to receive the extremity of the latch 12. The latch 12 is provided with the usual beveled outer face, 13, and near said beveled face lugs 14: are projected from opposite sides, the said lugs being so disposed that when the latch is in its normal position the outer faces of the lugs will engage the inner face of the lock-easing at the side of the latch-opening 11 therein. The latch 12 is further provided near its rear end wit-h a longitudinal slot, 14, and at its rear extremity with two prongs, 15 and 16, extending outward at right angles to the body of said latch, the prong 15 being located upon one face adjacent to one edge, and the prong 16 upon the opposite face at a diagonally-opposite point, as best shown in Fig. 3. The object of these'two prongs is to permit of the latch being reversed for attachment to the door opening either to the right or to the left.
The latch 12 is held in its normal position through the medium of two coil or spiral springs, 17, which springs are attached to the inner or rear end of the latch and have a bear- $erial No. 271,278. No model.)
ing upon. and are secured to the inner rear end surface of the lock-casing, as best shown in Fig. 1.
The knob-spindle 18 of the lock is adapted to pass through the casing and also through the recess or slot 141 in the latch, said spindle having secured thereon the usual follower, 19, which follower is adapted to engage either of the prongs 15 or 16, as occasion may demand.
In the upper end of the lock-casing near the front, a slot, 20, is produced, through which slot the upper member of an angular thumbbolt, 21, projects, the said thumb-bolt being pivoted between the sides of the lock-casing in such manner that when the vertical up wardly-extending member is carried toward .the front of the casing, the inner or horizontal member will engage the inner surface of the upper lug, 14:, of the latch, thus preventing the latch from being drawn inward by the manipulation of the spindle 18. An auxiliary angular locking-bolt, 22, is provided, which latter locking-bolt is pivoted below the latch 12 upon the central bin din g-screw, 23, in the casing. The horizontal member 21 of this lower locking-bolt is adapted to engage at its extremity the inner side of the lower latch-lug, 14, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The vertical member of the locking-bolt 22 is provided in its lower end with a cylindrical recess, 25, the walls of which recess are adapted to encompass the key-opening 26. To one of the sides of the lock-casin a spring, 27, is secured at one end, which spring is adapted to extend upward to the rear of the horizontal arm of the lower locking-bolt, 2;, and in engagement therewith, whereby when the said member is carried upward to an en gagement with the latch or discoi'mected therefrom it will be held in. a fixed position.
It will be observed that the latch 12 can only be drawn inward by means of the spindle 18, but that the same may be locked through the medium of the thumb latch-bolt 21 and also thekey-bolt 22, either one or both of which may be employed to this end.
If both of the lockingbolts have been brought in engagement with the latch and it is desired to throw back the latter, before the spindle 18 can be turned to accomplish this purpose the key must necessarily be inserted in the key-hole 26 and turned, whereupon, the bit of the key coming in contact with the walls of the recess 25, the vertical member of the lower locking-bolt is thrown to the rear, which causes the horizontal member to drop down out of engagement with the lower lug of the latch. The thumb may now be placed 'upon the upper locking-bolt, 20, and the vertical arm thereof be drawn rearward, whereupon the spindle may be turned and the latch be brought backward within the lock. As soon as the spindle is released, the springs 17, acting, will throw the latch forward again to its normal position.
In turning the spindle 18 the latch 12 is manipulated from the spindle by means of the engagement of the follower 1.) with one of the prongs 15 or 16 of the latch.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a lock-casing and a spring-actuated latch held in said casing, provided near its forward end upon opposite sides with aligning lugs, and at its rear end with prongs upon opposite faces and at opposite edges, of an angular thumb-bolt pivoted in the casing above the latch, adapted to en gage the upper latch-lug, an angular bolt pivoted below the latch, adapted to engage the lower lug of the latch, a spring bearing upon 'oneside of the locking member of said lower bolt, and means for reciprocating the latch, substantially as shown-and described.
2. The combination, with the casing having a key-hole, and a latch sliding in the casing above the key-hole and provided on its under side, toward its nose, with a lug, of an angular bolt pivoted at its angle just above said opposite lug, substantially as set forth.
HENRY KENDALL.
