lNSECT-DESTROYER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 894,205, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed August 13, 1888. Serial No. 282,597. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM Near, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marcellon, in the county of Columbia and State of Viseonsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Insect-Destroyers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in insect-destroyers; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the ac companying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective view of a machine embodying the invention. Fig. 2 represents a plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the base-board of the machine, having at one corner the standard B, upon the upper end of which is journaled the shaft of the driver-pulley C, which is provided with a crank-handle, c, and has in its periphery a groove, 0, that is V-shaped in cross-section.
At the opposite end of the base-board, and from opposite edges thereof, rise the standards D and E, the former of which is aligned with the standard B and has rising from its top the shaft (1, upon which are journaled the pulleys d (Z provided with grooved periphcries.
F is a horizontal shaft having its inner end journaled in the standard E near the top thereof, and having the pulley c, with a grooved periphery, secured upon and rotating with it. The said pulley forms the hub of a wheel, G, that has the outwardly-curving wire arms 9 g, at the ends of which the wooden blocks H H are attached, which blocks rest between the loops I I on the wire arms.
J J are cross-wires that connect the loops I of opposite arms, and are provided with the outstanding loops j at suitable points, there being a central loop on one wire that the opposite wire J passes through.
If desired, the base-board A may be dispensed with and the standards B, D, and E have their lower ends inserted in the ground.
In operation the wires J, and, if desired, the blocks and arms, have rags tied to them, and said rags and blocks are then saturated with oil. The rags are then set 011 fire and the wheel G rotated by a cord or band, K, over the drive-pulley C, the pulley e forming the hub of the wheel G, and around the pulleys d (Z as shown in the drawings. The light and flame cause the insects in the vicinity to fly thereto, and the rotation of the wheel causes the rags and blocks to burn more regularly and evenly and also faster, as the movement makes a draft toward the wheel.
The machine, besides the described use, may be employed as a fire-work frame, the charge or combustible of the tire-work being secured to the wires J or between the said wires and arms.
The drive-pulley C may be placed as far as desired from the wheel G, that has the burning rags secured to it, so that the operator will incur no risk of being burned.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A rotary wheel composed of a hub, out standing arms, and wires connecting the ends of said arms and provided with loops in which to tie rags saturated with oil, the hub of said wheel constituting a pulley, and being connected with a suitable (lllX'G-Pllllj' by a band or belt, substantially as specified.
2. The rotary wheel G, provided with the radial curved arms g g, the blocks H H, affixed to the outer ends of the said arms and the cross-wires J J, intersecting each other at their centers and provided at intermediate points with. outstanding loops j, in combina tion with the drive-wheel 0, provided with a crank, and the belt or band passing around the drive-wheel and the hub of the wheel G, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the drive-pulley C, having the crank-arm c, the horizontal pulleys d (P, the shaft F, standing horizontally from the standard E, the wheel G, composed of the pulley e, the arms g, the blocks H, and cross-wires J, connecting the ends of opposite arms and provided with loops j, and the band or belt K, substantially as specified.
4. The rotary wheel provided with a weight ed periphery and having a series of radial arms provided with loops, whereby rags saturated with a combustible material may be attached, in combination with means to rotate the said wheel, substantially as specified.
