JAMES A. STEPHENSON,
OF EL PASO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEDGE-TRIMMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,829, dated September 10, 1878 application filed January 26, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMLES A. STEPHENSON, of El Pa'so, in the county of Woodford and State of Illinois, have invented anew and valuable Improvement in Hedge-Trimmers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side View of my hedge-trimmer, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a hedge-trimmer, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents a rectangular frame of any suitable dimensions, provided with a tongue, B. O is the axle, placed and rotating in suitable boxes 011 the under side of the frame. This axle is, at one end onlyon the side toward the hedge-provided with a driving-wheel, D, secured thereon. On the outer side of the frame is a wheel, D, placed upon a spindle, a, which projects from a slotted plate or casting, E, secured to the side of the frame by a bolt, 1), which enables the operator to adjust this wheel, as hereinafter described.
011 the axle O is secured a pulley, G, having two or more circumferential grooves, as shown. Around this pulley passes a cord or belt, (I, which is twisted, and passes over a pulley,e, on a shaft, f, said shaft being placed in suitable bearings upon the front of the main frame A. One end of this shaft extends beyond and in front of the wheel D, and has the trimming-knives H secured upon its end, these knives being arranged in the form of a four-armed wheel.
On the back of the frame A are two forked standards or clips, h h, in which is placed a bar, I, held in said clips by means of pins 2' This bar extends in rear of and beyond the wheel D a suitable distance, and its end is, by a brace, 7t, connected with the front part of the frame A, as shown. On this end of the bar I is secured a head, J, through which passes a shaft, m. On the lower end of this shaft is secured another four-armed cutting or trimming wheel, H, and on the upper end of the shaft m is secured a pulley, n.
On the bar I, near the inner end, is a vertical pin or stud, 12, carrying two pulleys, s s, and directly opposite these pulleys is apulley, 15, mounted in a standard, K, on the frame A.
A cord or belt, d, passes around the pulley G on the shaft 0, over the pulley t, around the two pulleys s s, and around the pulley 'n on the shaft m.
Both the cutting-wheels H and H thus receive their rotating motion from the drivingaxle O, the wheel H trimming the side of the hedge and the wheel H the top thereof.
The bar I, which carries the wheel H, can be adjusted up and down in the clips h h, they being provided with series of holes for that purpose, and one end of said bar can be thrown upward more than the other when desired. This is of great importance for the following reason: Sometimes it is desired to out or trim the side of the hedge at an angle and not vertically. Then the outer wheel, D, is adjusted so as to throw the machine at the proper incline to bring the wheel H to the desired angle. The bar I must now be adjusted to bring the wheel H horizontal for cutting the top of the hedge, and this is accomplished by having the separate adjustments for the two ends of said bar.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the frame A, wheel D, and adjustable wheel D, of the perforated clips h h and the bar I, carrying the cuttingwheel H, and adjustable in the clips independently at either end, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
