UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUDLEM BASSETT ROCKWELL,- OF SUNBURY, PENNSYLVANIA.
MANUFACTURE OF KNIVES FOR NAIL-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,858, dated December 4, 1888.
Application filed June 19, 1888. Serial No. 277,526. (No model.)
7 T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUDLEM BASSETT ROCK- WELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sunbury, in the county of Northumberlaud and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Knives for Nail-Making Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in knives for nail-making machines and in chills for casting the said knives; and it consists, first, in a knife made of chilled cast-steel; secondly, in a chill made of iron and adapted for forming a knife for nail-cutting machines; and my invention further consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chilled knife embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a similar View of my improved chill for casting the knife. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Heretofore it has been the practice to make the knives for nail-cutting machines by forging the same from Mushet steel. Knives thus manufactured require regrinding when used shall be much more durable and efficient than the knives heretofore constructed.
To this end I provide a chill, A, which is made of iron and which has an interior opening or mold, B, which corresponds in size and shape with the knife to be fashioned. The scraps of Mushet steel are melted and poured into the chill, and thereby a knife, C, is produced at a very slight cost which. is much more durable and efficient than the knives heretofore made.
I have found that in practical operation my improved chilled knives thus constructed will out cold nails continuously in a nail-machine for six hours before it is necessary to regrind the knife, and will cut hot nails fifteen hours with one sharpening. 1
I do not desire to limit myself to the use of Mushet steel in manufacturing my knives, as the same maybe made of other suitable kinds of forged steel, if preferred.
The chill A has a removable face-plate, D,
which is secured to the body of the chill by means of clamps or bolts E.
Having described my invention, I claim The method of making knives for nailcutting machines, consisting in forging Mushet steel and subsequently melting the sameand pouring it into a chill-mold having an opening or mold of the requisite form.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LUDLEM BASSETT ROCK\VELL.
