UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' GEORGE SELSOR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE GERMANTOWN TOOL WORKS, OF SAME PLACE.
DIE FOR MAKING HATCHETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,312, dated May 19, 1885.
Application filod February 24, 1885. (N0 model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SELsoR, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Im provement in the Manufacture of Hatchets, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in WhlCll Figure 1 represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section of one of the dies employed in the manufacture of hatchets embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section of another die employed. Fig. 3 represents a face view of one of the dies of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a face view of one of the dies of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 represents a side elevation of a hatchet after removal from the dies.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of the manufacture of hatchets by the employment of dies, whereby there is a saving of labor and expense and a uniformity of the product.
Referring to the drawings, A and B represent, respectively, two sets of dies embodying my invention. The working-faces of the dies A are of the contour of the sides of a hatchet,
' the parts a corresponding to the blade, the parts b to the eye, and the parts 0 to the head or poll. The workingfaces of the dies 13 are of the contour of what may be termed the top and bottom of a hatchet, the parts d corresponding to the blade, the parts 6' to the eye, and the parts f to the head or poll.
A piece of metal is primarily forged or wrought to assume the general outlines of a hatchet, is placed successively between the dies A and B, or B and A, each set of (lies being properly operated so as to close, whereby the metal is subjected to the action of said dies and the form of the working-faces imparted thereto, after which the shaped hatchet may be ground and otherwise finished. It will be seen that by these meanslam enabled to produce hatchets in an expeditious manner, thus saving time and expense, the same being uniform and of a superior nature.
I am aware that it is not new to use dies in forming axes, and such I do not claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The dies A B, having working-faces con sisting of the parts a b c audd cf, conforming to the contour of the sides and top and bottom portions of a hatchet, substantially as described.
GEO. SELSOR. W'itnesses:
JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM,
A. 1?. GRANT.
