Description

J. BARRETT.
PUNCH-HOLDER.
Patented Jan. 25,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN BARRETT, OF BOONTON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUNCH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,689, dated January 25, 1876; application filed May 17, 1875.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BARRETT, of the town of Boonton, Morris county, State of New Jersey, have invented a Punch-Holder, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to provide a punch-holder for nutmachines, or other punching-machines, whereby the mode of making such tools is greatly simplified, saving labor in forging and fitting up.
,Punches'ot' the old style are made with a round shank and keyed fast in the holder, the whole length of the working part of the punch projecting, making it liable to spring and chat'e the die, and, in the case ofsmall punches, to break off at the neck. According to my invention, the punch, marked E in the drawing, may be made with parallel sides and allowed to project only far enough to enter the die, and when one end of the punch is dull it may be reversed in the holder, thereby getting double the work from each punch without redressing. As the punch wears it can be kept the desired length by placing liners between the end of the punch E and the bottom of the holder H. The nut, marked G,andtthe holder H should be made of steel, and the parts F F made of wroughtiron, being forged upon a pin planed down a little smaller than the punch designed to hold, so that upon being turned to fit down flush with the top of the holder H, and then being cutin two, they will gripe the punch and project a little above. The nut Gr being screwed down tight enough to hold the punch E from pulling out, there is still space between it and the bottom of the holder H. By unscrewing the nut and tapping upon the punch with a hammer it easily becomes loose.
I claim- The combination of the nutG, the taper barrel H, and the wedge shaped as and for the purpose set forth. 7
JOHN BARRETT.
