dictated gisten JAMES MORGAN, or PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 104,186, dated June 14, 1870.
IMPROVED MACHINE FOR MAKING HARROW-TEETH.
' The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent 'and making part of the same To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I', J AMES MORGAN, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and Staterot' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Machine for Making Har1'ow-'leeth;v and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled iu the art to make and use thev same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a machine for making harrow-teeth, and consists in an arrangement of a pair of pressing and pointing dies, a iin-cutter, and a cutter for,l cutting otf tle har, all as hereinafter specified.
'Figure 1 is a plan view of my machine, partly sectioned. Y v
Figure 2 is a 'section on the line x x.
Figure 3 is a section on the line y y.
Similar lettels of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a fixed die, and
B amoviug die, each having a V-shaped groove, suited-to the blank to be used, which, together, ter-v minate at C in a pyramidal point. y
This portion, e, of the die! is designed to point the blank, and, for that purpose, I so constrnctthe pointing portions .of the dies that they may serve the purposes of cutters or knives for removing portions ot' the surplus metal.
lo this end the pointing Vportions of the dies are tapered externally on the upper and under surfaces, following'lines parallel to those of the taper of the cavity, so as to reduce the walls, of the die'to cutting edges. ,'lhus 4the dies, as they are forced toward each other, shear o` two sides ot` the blank, and reduce it to a wedge-like form, as indicated at cl'. Y
These parts of the dies are formed in seperate blocks, c, of metal, joiningthe other blocks, )10u the line g.
The ,object of making these parts separate from the others 'is to be able to renew them oftener than the V'other parts, for they wear out sooner, in consequence of the greater wear on them in cutting and reducing the bar to form the points, while the function of the other parts is mainlyv only to hold the blank.
D is a fin-cutter, consisting of a steel plate with a V-notch in the end iitting over the pointed ends of the die's, and sliding back and forth over the line where thefaces of the dies meet, the movement being when the dies are closed on the metal.
This cutter is mounted in the end of a slide, E, working on the bed parallel with the slide F. It is made adjustable toward the die, and carries a guage, D, to arrest the bar when fed in.
This slide E is operated by the same driving-shaft, G, .which works the slide F, carrying the movable die. This shaft imparts motion to the slides by eccentrics or cams, H, working in yokes in the ordinary way of working such slides. p
The dies A B are mounted in their supports in the usual way, and are provided with dischargers, I, and a cutter, K, the cutter being attached to the xed die, so that the bar is forced against it by the movable die, and, the dischargers being attached to the die-supports, and extending across the line between the dies and hooking down into chaunels'formed in the oppasite dies,'so as to catch the teeth and pull them out of the grooves as the dies separate.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim asl new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The pressing and pointing dies, provided with V-grooves, terminating ina point, and tapered on the pointed ends at d, for cutting and flattening the point of' the blank, and made in two parts, all substantially 'as specified.
'2. The combination, with the pressing and pointing dies, of the iin-cutter, substantially as specified. 4 JAMES MORGAN. Witnesses:
THOMAS J oHNs, JN0. A. WILSON.
