Applicationfiled Jannary23Q1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS PATTERSON, of
Terra Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have inventeda new and valuable;
Improvement in Hook-Head Nail and Spike Machines, and I do hereby declare that the, following is a full, clear, and exact'descrip tion of the construction andoperation ofthe same, reference bei n g had to theannexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and
to the letters" and figures of reference marked thereon. a
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a top view of my invention. Fig.-2'is"a side 2 r with the griping-lever and bending-bar, the
open'header-slide, and the wedgeoam on the short end of the cutting-lever, all as hereinafter fully shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the frame of the machine, the sides of which are connected by strong transverse beams B, B, and B The side bars of the frame are formed with raised cheek-blocks or elevations G, which are vertically slotted to receive the journal-boxes a, in which the journals a of the cutting-lever L have their bearings. This lever extends in arched form across the frame, and is provided at one end with a power-arm, 0, extending to the pitman of the crank wheel 0 of the main drivingshaft d. v
The journal-boxes a of the cutting-lever are adjustable in the slots of the cheek-blocks, in order that a slight change in the line of bearing of the knife-edge may be made, upon requirement, to out the work thicker or thinner on the bed-die side, according to the character of the nails desired. For instance, it being premised that the nail-plate is fed to the machine at or at about an angle of forty-five degrees to the horizontal plane, which renders the cutting comparatively easy and lessens the jar upon the plate, and that the cutting-knife in leverL vibratesin an arc of a circle with 'ing the outer end of the'nail-plate by means of anadjustable support, upon which it rests, in the" case'of ordinary cut nails or spikes: but
in hook-head nails it is of the last importance to have th'e'blanks as nearly square'crosswise as it is possibleto make them. a To do thisthe centers of vibration of the lever L must be In eam order to cause the cutting-knife to descend upon the nail-plate at right angles. Thus the blankw'ill be square, or nearly so, in cross-section, and the adjustment of the centers of vibration of lever L must vary according to the thickness of the nail-plate.
Incutting hook-head clinch-nails the plates of which are three-sixteenths of an inch thick,.
lever L would be adjusted on its centers to shear a square blank; but this adjustment would not serve in cutting railroad-spikes, which are three-eighths of an inch thick, as they would not be square. The centers of lever L must therefore be still further raised.
The lever Lcarries a tool-holder, D, for the cutter, and in front thereof, on the front transverse beam, B, is the stationary tool-holder D, designed to receive the back piece, it, the beddie l, and the bed-knife.
Depending from the under sides of the side bars of. the frame are the broad hangers or cheeks Y, in which are seated the journals of the right-angular griping-lever M, extending in arched form across the machine under the main body of the cutting-lever, and having a N represents the bending-bar, arranged alongside the arm (1 of the griping-lever, and extending through a slotted guide, f, on the middle transverse bar, B. This bending-bar extends over the driving-shaft, and is provided in front and rear of said shaft with lugs f between which work the cam-projections g on the shaft 01 in such a manner that they engage said lugs g, and, by a quick movement, thrust the bending-bar backward and forward in advance of the griping and releasing movements of the griping-lever; or the backwardmovement of the bendingbar may be given by means of aretractin g-spring. The forward end ot the bar N extends alongside the gripingdie of the griping-lever, which is wider than the bed-die l, and serves to bend the end of the blank over the bed-die in hook form, this hooked end being afterward flattened or headed by the transverselyoperating header P. The header is designed to be of such form as may be required in shaping the head, and is seated in the open recess or seat of a U shaped holder, P, the base of which is of dovetail form and slides in ways F secured to the adjustable guide-plate 0. These ways are arranged cross wise of the frame, and the header is thrust transversely against the hooked end of the nail-blank by means of a wedge-cam, 'v, on a short forward arm or projection of the cuttin lever L, coming into actionand operating the holder as the cutting-lever rises aft er having finished severing the nail-blank from the nailplate. The header seat or holder is retracted by means of a spring, S.
The material fed to this machine should be of good quality and at a red heat.
The bending-bar may be removed, if necessary, and the machine operated as a plain header.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
The hook-head nail-machine, having in rear the cam-shaft ri, carrying the wheel 0, cam d, and cam-projectionsg, and in connection therewith the transverse cutting-lever L, provided with adjustable journal-boxes a, a rear powerarm, 0, connected by a pitman to said wheel, and a forward projection having a wedgeshaped cam, 11, in combination with the rightangular griping-lever M, the bending-bar N, having the lugs f the adjustable guide-plate O, the transverse header-holder P, engaging with said Wedge-shaped cam, and the retracting-springs S and f, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above Ihave hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS PATTERSON.
