Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. r
GEORGE SNYDER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED COMBINATION OF THE STROP AND HONE.
Specification forming part of' Letters Patent No. 39,362, dated July 28, 1863.
.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known'that I, GEORGE SNYDER, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a Combined Hone and Strop and Case for the Same; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the s tme, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists of a hone, strop, and case constructed and arranged in the manner described hereinafter, the whole forminga new and useful article of manufacture.
ln-order to enable others to make my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On reference tothe accompanying drawings, which form a part otthis specification, Figure 1 is a side View of my combined hone and strop and case for the same; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section; Fig. 3, atransverse section on the line 1 2, Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a perspective view.
Similar lettersrefer t similar parts th roughout the several views.
A is a suitably-formed block of wood, in the upper surface of which is set the hone B, one end, a, of the block being so shaped as to form a handle to be grasped by the hand.
C is a lid, recessed in the under side, and hinged at b to one end of the block A, the lid when down covering thej'ace ofthe block and inclosing the hone. To the upper surface of the lid C is cemented a strip, e, of leather properly prepared for being used as a strop.
D is a casing of stitfpaper, leather, or other suitable material, and is divided longitudinally by the partition c into two compartments, the larger of which is of such a size as to contain the block A and lid-Ofwhen the latter is depressed, the upper compartments, G, being ot' proper dimension, to receive one or two razors, the end of this compartment being closed by a ap, d, as best observed on reference to Figs. 2 and 4.
When the razor has to be applied to the hone the latter is exposed by throwing the lid C back.
After the razor has been sharpened on the hone B, thelid C is turned down to the position shown in Fig. 2, and the leather covering the top surface of the same used as a strop.
The advantage of combining the block A, hone B, lid C, and strip of leather e will be apparent, the strop hein g alwa s at hand ready for use and resting on a solid and steady base.
The case D, which may be considered a necessary adjunct to-in tact, au essential part otl the combined hone and strop-contributes its advantages, as it has acompartment for the .reception of a razor or razors, the whole contrivance being` simple and compact and especially well adapted for use in the army and for travelers.
l claim as myinvention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, the block A, hone B, lid C, and strop e, with a case, D, the whole being constructed and arranged as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have `signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
eEo. sNYDEE.
