SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,522, dated November 27, 1888.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS H. SAUNDERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Scrubbing-Brushes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon,whieh form apart of this specification.

Figure 1 is a top view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 a transverse section, of a scrubbing-brush provided with my invention.

The nature of my invention is set forth in the claims hereinafter presented.

This bellows is to be supplied with a finely-powdered scouring material or asaponaeeous powder, as may be desired, access being had to the interior of the bellows to enable it to be charged with the above-mentioned material by removing the stopper 1) from the opening a.

- Secured to the top of the brush is abraeket, 6, provided with two cars, to which is pivoted a cammed lever,f. There is arranged under said cammed lever and between the ears of the bracket a l'lBXlblOllOSO or tube, g,wl1icl1 passes down through ahole, h, in the top of the brush and termi natcs among the bristles of the brush, as shown in Fig. 3. At its outer end it is provided with a nozzle, l, as shown in Fig. 1.

In using the above-described brush on afloor the nozzle t" is to be inserted in an opening in the lower portion of a water bucket, the calnmed lever being turned so as to close the hose g, and said hose is to be of sullicientlength to allow of the proper or necessary movement of the brush over and upon the surface of the floor by the hand of an attendant as an ordinary scrubbing-brush would be used. On raising or allowing the end of the cammed lever to rise into the position shown in Fig. 3 water will flow through the hose to thebristies of the brush as may be required, and by raising and forcing down the top of the bellows the contents thereof will be forced out through the conduits d onto the floor, as cir cumstances may require. Thus it willbeseen that my scrubbing-brush can be readily supplied with water and the floor with ascouring or cleansing material while the brush is being moved about upon the surface thereof, and the flow of water to the brush can be regulated by varying the pressure of the palm of the hand on the end of the camlned lever while grasping the brush.

The combination of the scrubbing-brush A, provided with a hose for supplying it with water, and a cam-levee], for checking or regulating the flow of the water from a reservoir or bucket, with the bellows B, to contain a powdered scouring or cleansing material, said bellows having passages and tube (Z on each sit e thereof, through which said scouring or cleansing material can be ejected therefrom onto the surface to be scoured or cleansed, all as shown, and substantially as set forth.
