SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,449, dated November 27, 1888.

Beit known that I, GEORGE C. PEEscoTT, of Peabody, county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in SafeLocks, of which thefollowing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, likeletters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to locks especially adapted to be used on safes and vaults, it having for its object to provide a simple yet eflieient lock.
My invention,therefore,consists,essentially, in a safe or vault, of the door, and lugs or projections Within the safe, combined with the gravity-lock composed of the frame-Work of bars movable on said door and cooperating with the said lugs or projections to form a lock for the said safe, substantially as Will be described.
Other features of my invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specitication.
Figure 1 shows in elevation a safe or vault provided with my improved lock, the door being Wide open. Fig. 2 is a detail to be referred to; Fig. 3, a vertical section through the safe or vault with the door closed and locked; Fig. 4, a vertical section through the safe or vault With the door closed but unlocked; Fig. 5, a section on either line x x or m x', Fig. 4; and Fig. 6, a detail, to be referred to.
The safe or vault A, of steel, brick, or other suitable material, is provided with the usual door, A', preferably of steel. The door A has secured to its inner side, by bolts a, blocks a', preferably Vshaped, as shown in Fig. 5, the said blocks constituting guides for bars a2 ai. The bars a,L a have secured to them, as shown, by caps a, one or more crossbars, c5, which extend beyond the side bars, a* a, they being of substantially the Width of the safe or vault doorway. The side bars, a2 a3, are herein shown as still further connected or joined together by the crossbar ai. The door A has also secured to its inner side, beyond or outside the side bars, a a3, by bolts b, additional bars b b2, preferably of considerable thickness, each bar being cut away (see Fig. 6) to form a pocket, as at b3, when secured to the door, there being a pocket for each end of each cross bar a5.
The crossbars a5 are preferably made round, and the inner face'of the bars a2 a3, forming one side of the pocket b, is preferably made convex or rounding, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, to obtain the least possible contact of metal, thereby diminishing the friction between the barsblandcrossbarsc. Theendsofthccrossbars a5, beyond the side bars, c2 a", co-operate with lugs or projections b4, secured to or forming part ofthe sides of the safe or vault, there being preferably a lug for each end of each crossbar ai.
The safedoor is herein shown as provided with top bolts, b5, and bottom bolts, Zi", movable in guides If bs, secured tothe said door. The top bolts, b5, are secu red, as shown, to a bar, b, and the bottom bolts, b, to a bar, b1", the said bars being connected, respectively, by links c c' to opposite ends of a lever, ou, pivotcd at e5 to the safe door. Thelower bar, om, as shown, has a stud, c4, to which is pivoteda device, c5, (herein shown as a leven) adapted to be retained in position to be acted upon by the cross-bar a7 to shoot home the top and bottom bolts, as will be described.
The side bar c3, as herein shown, is provided with a recess or notch,cZ, adapted to be engaged by a pin or stud, d', on a slide-bar, d, herein shown as acted ou by a spring, da, one end of the said slidebar engaging, as shown, a notch in a pivoted lever, (1*, the said side bar af being retained in its elevated position by the slide-bar d2 until the lever d* is acted upon by a cam or stud,d5,on the decreasing, which occurs when the door is closed.
When the safe-door is open and the bolts and frame-Work of bars in position to lock the door when closed, the said bolts and bars occupy the position shown in Fig. l.
Vhen the door is closed,the frame-Work of bars is permitted to descend by gravity, as shown, by the stud d5 acting on the lever dt, thereby disengaging the pin d from the notch d. The frame-Work of bars descends from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 3, the cross-bars ai being behind and in line with the lugs or projections b", thus securely locking the said door, the said gravity-lock or frame-work of bars being supported or sustained in this position by a retaining device, herein shown as a slide-bar, e,(seeFig. 2,) hav- IOO ing an arm, c', extended in the path of move ment of the cross bars a", the middle cross-bar a5, as shown, resting upon the said arm when the door is locked.
Vhen the gravity-lock or frame-work of bars falls from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 8, the cross-bar ci acts upon the device c5, disengaging itfrom its catch c" and shoots the top and bottom bolts home through the link c c and lever c. The door A remains locked as long as the slide-bar is retained in the position shown in Fig. 3 and by full lines, Fig. 2, by a pin, ci, on a lever, ci, having an arm, c", engaged by a cam or disk, c, pivoted, as shown, to one side of the doorcasing, the said cam or disk being connected to and operated by a time-lock of usual construction and not herein shown. The cam or disk c has a flat portion or notch, e, in its periphery, into which the arm c4 drops when the proper time has arrived to open the safe, thc said cam or disk being rotated in the di rection of arrow 20 through the timelock,the lever c3 descending into the dottedline position shown in Fig. 2, thus diseugaging the pin c'2 from the bar c and permitting the said bar and gravity-lock to drop into the position shown in Fig. et, the cross bars a being below the lugs or projections b".
The top and bottom bolts are withdrawn from their sockets when the gravitydoek descends into the position shown in Fig. 4, as herein shown, by the uppermost cross-bar af acting on a stud, c, secured to the bar b, thus allowing the door to be opened. After the door is opened, the gravitylock or frame-work of bars may then be raised to place it in operative position by turning the pinionf engaging teeth f', herein shown on the side bar a?, the pinion being provided, as shown, with a square arbor to be engaged by asuitable handle. (Not shown.) The device ci will be turned from the position shown in Fi'f. 4. to that shown in Fig. l by hand.
It will be noticed that the timelock is placed within the safe and away from the door, thus diminishing the danger oit` stopping the said time-1ock by concussion produced by blows or from other source.
I claiml. In a sal'c or vault, the door, lugs or projection within the safe, a gravity-lock composed of a framework of bars movable on the said doors, and a ietaining device to normally holdl the gravity lock in elevated position above the lugs, combined with a cam or projection within the sate or vault to act upon or release the said retaining device when the door is closed, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In asate or vault, the door and a gravitylock composed of side and crcss bars movable on said door and lugs or projection b within Safe to cooperate with the said frame-work of bars, combined with a retaining device, e, to retain the said cross bars behind and in line with the said lugs or projections, substantially as described.
3. In asatc or vault, the door anda gravityloek composed of side and cross bars movable on said door and lugs or projections b* within the safe to co-operate with the said frame-work of bars, combined with a retaining device, c, to retain the said cross bars behind and in line with the said lugs or projections, and with a device operatively connected to the ti ine-lock to release the retaining device c and permit the gravity-lock to descend in a position below the lugs or projection to unlock the door, snbstantially as described.
Ai'. In a safe, the door and bars b b, secured thereto and provided with pockets,'as b, combined with a gravity-lock composed of side bars, a2 a, and cross-ba rs a, the said cross bars being extended through said pockets, and with lugs or projections b to co-operate with said cross-bars to lock the door, substantially as described.
5. In a safe or vault, the combination, with a gravity-lock composed of side bars, a a, and cross-bars a, of lugs or projections b within the safe, and with which the gravity-lock c0- operates to lock the said door, and top and bottom bolts adapted to be operated, as described, by the said gravitylock, as and for the purpose specified.

In a safe or vault, the combination, with a gravitylock composed of side bars, a a, and crossbar a, of top and bottom bolts and links c c and lever ci to connect said bolts, and device ci, adapted to be normally retained in position to be acted upon by thc gravity-lock to lock the said top and bottom bolts, substantially as specified.
