POWER ATTACHMENT FOR TREADLE MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,131, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed August 23, 1887. Serial No. 247,662.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EUGENE VON BOEOK- MANN, of Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Power Attachment for Treadle Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a novel means for applying power to the ordinary form oftreadle machine, the object ofthe invention being toin crease the capacity of such machines, but at the same time to so arrange the parts that they may be driven by foot-power when desired.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved arrangement for applying power to treadle machines, the apparatus being illustrated as it appears when arranged in connection with a perforator. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken at one side of the treadle of the machine, the view being given to illustrate the connection of the machine-frame with the flooring of the building; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating the arrangement when the machine is secured to a floor made up of masonry.
In constructing such an apparatus as the one forming the subject-matter of this application I provide a frame, 10, above which there is mounted a shaft, 11, that is supported by bearings 12, said bearings being rigidly connected to the frame 10; This shaft 11 is provided with a driving-pulley, 13, and with two parallel arms, 14, between the ends of which there is mounted a roller, 15, said roller being mounted upon a shaft, 16, that is supported by the arms 14.
The machine in connection with which my driving apparatus is to be employed is mounted upon the frame 10 in position so that its treadle 20 will be borne upon by the roller 15, the shaft 11 being revolved in the direction of its arrow by a belt, 17, which runs in connection with its driving-pulley 13, the arrangement being such that at everyrevolution of the shaft 11 the treadle 20 will be depressed and the machine will be operated.

In the drawings I have illustrated my driving apparatus as it appears when arranged to drive an ordinary perforating-machine, such as that shown at A; but I desire it to be distinctly understood that the apparatus could be employed in connection with any form of treadle machine.
In order that the frame 10 may be securely anchored, I provide hooked bolts 18, which engage with the floor-beams, as illustrated in Fig. 2, the upper ends of the bolts being threaded, in order that they may be engaged by nuts 19. If, however, the frame 10 is to be secured to a base of masonry, the anchoring-bolt is formed with an outwardly-extending arm, as shown at a in Fig. 3, this arm and the lower portion of the bolt being embedded in the masonry, as shown in the figure last referred to.
lVith such an apparatus as has been described the capacity of a machine in connection with which it is used will be greatly increased, and it will be seen that by moving the shaft llto a position so that its arms 14 will be out of the way of the operator the treadle 20 may be depressed by the foot.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Apower attachment for treadle machines, consisting of a frame adapted to support the machine to be driven, and a shaft journaled in said frame and provided with a pulley, and arms having a roller journaled in their outer ends, substantially as described.
2. A power attachment for treadle machines, consisting of the frame 10, provided with the bearings 12 and adapted to support the machine to be driven, the shaft 11, journaled in the said bearings and provided with the arms 14, the roller 15, journaled between the outer ends of the said arms, and the pulley 13, se cured on the said shaft, substantially as herein shown and described.
