UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JAMES M. ALBERTSON, OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICT.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-POWERS.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, J Arms M. ALBERTsoN, of the town and county of New London, State of Gonnectiout, have invented certain Improvements in Horse-Power Machines, of Which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to improvements i-n that class of horse-powers in which the first or leverwheel 1s revolved around a pedestal which supports the other running parts of the machine; and consists of an im proved combination of parts, whereby the machine is made simpler in its construction and more convenient for its purposeviz., that of a motive power to be placed on the ground-licor of the building and communicating with machinery placed on the floor above, and thereby relieving the building or its oors from supporting any portion of the horse-power machinery, by a belt direct from the machine.
Figure l is a side elevation of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is atop view, showing the arrangement of parts. Fig. 3 is a detail of same. Fig. 4 is avieW of the horse-power as placed in the building.
Like letters refer to like parts.
A and B are foundation-timbers, on which the machine rests. O is a pedestal, formed with a base-plate or flange, supporting a cylindrical body or shaft, around Which the Wheel E, provided With levers T T, revolves. To the top of this pedestal C is secured the beam I by bolts J. This beam is provided with suitable journals for the reception and revolution of the vertical shaft L and horizontal shaft P, to which shafts are attached the bevel-gears M and N. To the bottom of the shaft L is attached a pinion, F, gearing with Wheel E, and at the end of the shaft P is attached the belt-pulley S. It will be seen that the revolution of the levers T T will communicate their motion, by means of the intermediate gearing, to the belt-pulley S.
I do not claim as my invention any of the parts of the above When used separately or in any manner not embodying the arrangement shown and described. I do not claim as my invention the use of the combination of gear- Wheels shown when used independent of the pedestal C.
I claim- The pedestal C forming a vertical shaft or journal for the lever-Wheel E and supporting the beam I, in combination with the pinion F, shaft L, bevel-Wheels M and N, and shaft P attached to the beam I, all arranged and operating substantially as herein set forth.
JAS. M. ALBERTSON.
