IMPROVEMENT IN HOR$E*POWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,622, dated July 8, 1873; application filed May 10, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GILFILLAN, of Speier, in the county of Blue Earth and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvem ent in Horse-Powers, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to furnish a horse-power for thrashing grain and other purposes whioh shall be better adapted for such purposes than horse-powers of ordinary construction and it consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1, Sheet 1, represents a top or plan. Fig. 2, Sheet 2, is a vertical section of Fig. 1 taken on the line m a.

A is the foundation-frame, which rests upon the ground. This frame is usually made of wood and supports the operating-parts of the horse-power. B is'a bed-wheel, which is attached to the frame A by means of the arms 0. The inner ends of these arms are attached to the central stationary frame D, the top of which is a circle and the bottom a support for the central vertical shaft E. The cogs of this bed-wheel are on the upper side and engage with the vertical internal and external gear-wheels F F, which are on the horizontal cross-shaft Gr. This cross-shaft is supported by the stands H 11, attached to the revolving frame I. The power is applied to this frame I by means of levers, which pass through the stands J and enter recesses in the central cap K, in the usual manner. L are arms, which connect the rim of the frame I with the central cap. M are the traverse-wheels, attached to the frame I by means of cars and pivots, which revolve through slots in the rim of the frameand bear upon the top of the bedwheel, and thus prevent friction between the frame and bed-wheel. The internal cogs of the vertical wheels F F engage with the wheels N N. Three wheels are on the shafts O O, and on the other ends of the shafts are bevel-wheels P P, which mesh into the pinion Q on the central vertical shaft E. The shafts 0 O are supported in suitable boxes on the top of the revolving frame I and central cap K, which cap forms part of the frame I. The exterior cogs 0f the vertical wheels F F engage with the cogs of the bed-wheel, and thus impart motion to the central vertical shaft E. R is a bevel-wheel on the shaft E. S is the tumbling'rod shaft, upon the end of which is the bevel-wheel T, which engages with the wheel R. U are friction-rolls, attached by means of the strap V to the revolving frame I, which revolve upon the under side of the bed-wheel, and thus keep the frame I in its proper position. The rim of the revolving frame I is cut away to give room for the wheels F F to engage with the bed-wheel, the diameters of the frame and the bed-wheel being the same.
With the wheels of the horse-power thus arranged the strain is so distributed and divided that the danger of failure in any one part is but slight, while the mode of communicating the motion to the tumbling-rod is believed to result in a great increase of leverage and consequeut saving of power.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The arrangement and combination of the bed-wheel B, bed-frame A, revolving frame I, vertical wheels F F, pinion-wheels N N, bevelwheels P P, pinion Q, bevel-wheel R, and pinion T, with their'respective shafts and stands, substantially as shown and described. 7
2. The external and internal gear-wheels F, mounted on the cross-shaft G having its bearings in the frame H, in combination with the wheel B and pinions N, as and for the purpose specified.
