To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Gilmer, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented certain `new and useful Improvements in Vindmills, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates toI improvements in windmills; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction, whereby a lighter and stronger machine is obtained and the tendency to travel around into the wind is obviated,sub stantially as hereinafter set forth in the claims.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use lthe same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a central vertical' section oi' my windmill. Fig.` 2 is a plan view ofthe frame carrying the rollers, and Fig. 3 is a face view of part of my wind-wheel.
A represents the frame of the tower on which my wheel is supported, and which may be of any of the usual and well-known forms. Up on the upper end of this tower is secured a circular plate or casting, B, providedwith a central opening, b, and carrying on its periphery a series of antifi'iction wheels or rollers, b I1', as shown in Figs. l and 2.
O represents the turntable, east with upper and lower peripheral fianges, c c, and a down` wardly-projecting central hub, O', which enters the opening b in the plate B, as seen in Fig. l. This hub acts as acenter upon which the turn-table revolves, and the anti-friction. wheels b b on the plate or cap B travel be tween the flanges c c of the turn-table and hold it perfectly steady, preventing it tipping in any direction, or at any time jumping from its seat, while no bolts or screws are used for this purpose, which are at all times liable to break or jar loose.
On one side the turn-table O is on itsupper face formed with a projection, O2,which forms a bearing for the shaft D,upou which the windwheel is secured. On the same side, and in line with the projection O2, is a barrel, C, through which the shaft D passes, and upon the outer end of this shaft is secured a socketed casting, E, from which radiate the arms E of the wheel. Upon the outer ends of these arms E is secured a ring, F, east in sections, having ianged ends, which clasp the arms E, and are bolted together, as seen at ff, Fig. 3. The sections of this rim or ring F are formed with transverse lugs or projections f and a longitudinal iiange, f '1, the purpose of which will be -presently seen. The sections of the ring F are perforated close to the lugs j" and iiangefi, and in each oi' these perforations is screwed a metal rod or tube, G,.which form the arms upon which the fans H are hinged by straps h on. their rear sides. The arms or rods G, if simply screwed into the ring F, would be veryliable to break out, but, being braced by the lugs j and flange j in the direction of the greatest strain, are held firmly in place and make a very light but stronglyconstructed wheel.
The fairblades H are hinged upon the rods or tubing G, preferably at one side of their center, and are each provided with an eye, h', to which is secured alink or hook, Z, connected at its rear end to a ring, I, of metal, as seen in Fig. l.. This ring is supported on arms I, secured in a hub, I, revolving with the wheel and sliding horizontally on the barrelG, and by connecting this hub with the governor gen` erally used on this class of wheels the speed of the wheel in v aryi ng winds'may be easily reguv lated.

carrying bevel-gear, IJ', meshing with the' gear d. This shaft passes downward through `the hollow hub O of the turntable, and is here surrounded by a hollow shaft, M, carrying on its upper end a bevel-gear, M, also meshing with the gear d. The shafts pass downward a short distance, and are supported by cross' bars of the frame of the tower. They carry on their lower ends, connected by ratchets ynly iy and pawls mf the bevel-gears M` If, both meshing with a pinion, N, on the/end of a shaft, N', journaled in the frame of the tower, and supplied with a chain orbelt wheel, oz, for driving machinery, and a wrist-pin, n', for connection with a pump.
In all windmills using a single bevel-gear IOO ing for communicating motion from the wheel to the machinery there is a tendency on the part ofthe Wheel to travel around out of the Wind; but by using a double gearing, as I have shown, with shafts revolving in opposite direction, this tendency is counteracted, while the' ratchets and pawls allow of any change of position rendered necessary by a change in the direction of the wind. The ratchet-and-pawl devices may as readily be used ou the upper as the lower set of gearing.
, Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, aud desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. YIn a wind-Wheel, the ring F, cast in sections, as described, and provided with the transverse lugs j" and longitudinal flange f, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a wind-wheel, of the ring F, cast in sections, as described, and pro-A vided With the lugs f. and ange j, with the rods or tubes G, carrying the swiveled or hinged fan-blades H, substantially and for the purpose set forth.
3. The turn-table C, having a central hub, C', peripheral flanges c c', and projection bearing C2, and barrel C, all cast in one piece, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination of the plate B, having central opening, b, and friction-rollers b, the turn-table C, provided with flanges c c, and having hub C, projecting bearing C2, and barrel C, shaft D, carrying gear wind-Wheel E, having arms E, the sectional ring F, having` lugs f and angef-', the pivoted fans H, controlling wheel or ring l I, shafts L M, gears L M L2 M2, and the shaft having pinion N and chain-Wheel fn, all substantially as shown and described.
