WINDMILL SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 228,672, dated June 8, 1880.
Application filed March 19, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID C. PAYNE and DELoss A. DANFORTH, of Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have 5 invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windmills; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let- IO ters of marked reference thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a windmill, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved windmill. Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are detailed views of parts thereof. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the hub of the wind-wheel.
A represents the tower or derrick, con- 25 structed in any suitable manner.
The turn-table is composed of two upright posts, B B, fastened inside of a flanged circle,
. O, at the bottom. At the top the posts are connected by'a cross-bar, D, and at a suitable 0 intermediate point is a metal band,.E, carrying a horizontal friction-roller, a, on each side. These rollers work against a circular bearin g, F, in the top of the derrick, as shown in Fig. 3, while the circle 0 rests upon beveled rollers 3 5 I), farther down in the derrick. There are also horizontal rollers (1 bearing against the periphery of said circle, as shown in Fig. 4, the whole forming the lower bearing for the turntable.
In suitable boxes upon the cross-bar I) is placed the wind-wheel shaft .h, upon the inner or rear end of which is a bevel-gear wheel, 0, which meshes with a similar wheel, 2', on the upper end of a rod or shaft, f, placed in suita- 5 ble boxes or bearings within the turn-table,
whereby a rotary motion may be communicated when desired.

On the ontar face of the wheel 0 is a wristpin, 00, for the attachment of the pitman F, said pitman having at its lower end a collar, k, through which the rodf passes, and to this collar the pump-rod G is swiveled.
On the outer end of the shaft h the windwheel is secured. This wind-wheel is made in segmental sections, and consists of a hub, G, having a series of radial mortised arms to receive the-inner ends of the radial arms I I, the outer ends of which are connected by the rim H, the sections of this rim having at their ends plates m, to overlap the ends of the adjoining sections and be bolted thereto. The arms are connected by segments, forming a circle-brace, J.
. L L are the fans of the wheel, set in an inclined position, as shown, the inner ends of the fans being fitted in grooves on the circle J, while their outer ends are fitted in grooved blocks a n on the inner side of the rim H.
In hearings on the ends of the bar D is placed a-shaft, M, which carries at one end the main vane N and at the other end a small up right vane, O. The main vane N is hung out of the center and beyond the rim of the wheel, so that when the wind blows hard enough against the upright vane O to turn it a little the wind catches the large vane and turns it up quick to bring the wheel edgewise to the wind.
At the end of the shaft M, where the vane O is located, is also attached a vane, P, set at an angle of about forty-five degrees, to assist in bringing the wheel back into wind, when the main vane turns back edgewise, by the action of a weighted arm, R, connected to the shaft.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The turn-table composed of the two posts B B, flanged circle 0, band E, and rollers a, in combination with the derrick provided with the circular bearing F and rollers 11 1?, substantially as herein shown and described.
