Description

N.FETERS. PHOTO LITHDGRAFH UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
L. N. LELAND, OF GRAFTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOT-FORMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,293, dated July 21, i863.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, L. N LELAND, of Grafton, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boot-Forms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specitication, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention; Fig. 2 a side sectional View of the same, the plane of section passing through the center; Fig. 3, a detached side View of a part of the metal iixtures pertaining to the form.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to an improvement in the metal fixtures pertaining t0 the cla-mp and screw of a boot form, whereby the clamp is rendered capable of being adjusted so as to draw or act upon the leather at different angles as occasion may require. The ordinary clamp and screw are affixed to the form in such a manner as to admit of no adjustment, and hence the leather can be stretched at one point only, and separateforms are required for slight differences in the shape of the leather, a difficulty which is obviated by my invention.
To enable those'skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, l will proceed to describe it.
A represents a bootform, which may be constructed,in the usual manner, of wood, and pivoted with the recess d at the angle, which Inay be the same as those in the ordinary forms.
B represents a metal plate, which is secured to the bottom of the recess a in any proper manner, and has a circular hole, b, made in itr with two recesses or notches, c o, at opposite points.
C is a metal plate, which has a projection, d, of tubular form, extending from it at right angles and of such diameter that it may pass through the hole b. The tubular projection d is provided with two lugs or flan ges, e e, which pass through the notches o c at the edge of the hole b, and when said projection d is turned so as to bring the lugs or flanges c e out of line with the notches c c the plate C is held or retained in position. The plate C rests or bears against projections f f on the plate B, so as to admit of the former having a rocking motion on the projections j' as centers, and the degree of oscillation of the plate O may be limited by screws g g, which pass through the plate C, one near each end. (See Figs. 2 and 3.) u
D represents a screw, and E E the jaws ot' an ordinary boot-clamp, or such as are gen' erally used. The inner end of the screw D is fitted in the tubular projection d of the plate C and-bears against its inner end.
From the above description it will be seen that when the jaws E E of the clamp are engaged with the ends of the leather F, and the latter drawn or stretched over the form by turning the screw D, that the angle of the pull of the screw may be varied, owing to theA oscillation allowed the plate O. Thus the leather F may be stretched at ditt'erent angles or degrees of Obliquity over the form A, and
the shape of the leather may be varied or .Y
modified on one and thesame form.
ln the ordinary forms the screw D of the clamps have no play or lateral movement, and hence the pull or stretch of the leather cannot be varied as in my invention. It will be understood, of course, that a strip or portion only of theleath er F is sho wn in the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what `l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The plate C, provided with the tubular projection d and screws g g, in connection with the plate B, provided with the projections ff, when the above parts are used in combination with a boot-clamp formed of a screw, D, and jaws E E', all arranged to operate in connection with-a boot-form, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
L. N. LELAND.
