Description

a M. ADAMS.
Bomb-Lance. No. 38,207. Patented April 21, 1863.
N. PETERS, PHOTO LITHOGRAPNER, WASNINQ'YON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAYHEW ADAMS, OF OHILMARK, MASSACHUSETTS.
\ IMPROVED HARPOON.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,207, dated April 21, 1863.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, MAYHEW ADAMS, of Ohilmark, in the county of Dukes and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Harpoon for (latching Whales; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
The nature of my invention consists in providin g an upper semi-revolving head to a harpoon made for that purpose, as shown by Figure 1 in the accompanying drawings, (marked 13,) which rests upon a segment of a screw on either side, (marked 01,) being provided with a corresponding groove within, (marked 0.)
The letters 0 and fshow a wooden pin, made to hold the part marked B in the right position with the part marked A for entering the whale.
Letter S shows a catch to hold the head B in its place.
Fig. 2 shows the position the harpoon will take when fast to a whale with a strain upon it. The wooden pin breaks and the lower head,
A, turns with the shank at rightangles with the head B.
Fig. 3 shows the upper head or flukes drawn off the shank, so as to present the circular grooves, (marked 0.) Letters A and B show where it rests on the points marked A of Fig. 4.
Fig. 4 is like the head of a common harpoon, with a fragment of the shank, with the addition of the two segments of screws or points marked A.
What 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The application to the harpoon of asemirevolving head resting upon segments of screws or angular pivots, causing the harpoon to turn at right angles with the semi-revolving head when fast to a whale and a strain set upon it, and then to remain fixed or coupled together.
. MAYHEW ADAMS.
