PNUMATIC DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION kforming part of Letters Patent No. 392,927, dated November 13, 1888.
Application iiled April 5, 1888. Serial No. 260.732. (Model.)
To a/ZZ wtom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrrr MUsER, of the city, county, and State of New York, havein vented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Door-Checks, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to an improved pneumatic door-check of that class in which the motion of the door in closing is gradually arrested by the joint action of a piston applied to the door-frame and a valved air-cylinder applied to the door.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front elevationof a door with my improved pneumatic door-check, showing the saine in closed position. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the door-frame on line .r rv, Fig. 1, showing an end elevation of the aircylinder of my improved door-check. Figs. 3 and 4 are horizontal sections on lineg/y,Fig. l, showing the door and its check device respectively in closed and open position; and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section on line .e z, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a door; B, thc door-frame; C, a piston, the piston-rod C of which is applied by a suitable hinge-connection to the door-frame, and D an aircylinder that is supported on abrackct,D', which bracket is hinged to the door, as shown clearly in Fig. l.y The piston C is supported at a proper angle of inclination for the aircylinder D,either in fixed position or by means of .a set-screw, a, and a spring, b, which latter 1s interposed between lugs of the supportingplate of the piston-rod G and of a shoulder plate, b', of the piston-rod, as shown clearly in Fig. 4. llhe air-cylinder D is open at that side which faces the piston C, and provided at the opposite end with air-inlet openings 'd and with an interior suction-valve, d', of rubber, leather, or other suitable material, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,) which valve opens so as to admit air into the cylinder when the door is opened, but which is closed by the pressure of the air as soon as the open end of the cylinder passes over the piston C. The cylinder Dis further provided at its valved end -with a small air-exhaust aperture, e, through ing-rod, E, the opposite end of which is pivoted to a bracket-arm. E', which is adj ustabl y guided in a bracket, E2, attached to the doorframe, the end of said bracket-arm extending into a socket, e', of the door-frame, as shown clearly in Figs. 3 and 4. The bracket-arm E has to be made adjustable for the purpose of setting the connecting-rod E at the proper distance from the door-frame, according to thc style of hinge used. For closing the door automatically a spring-actuated closing device is employed, which consists of a barrel,F,ap plied to the door, a pintle, F', in said barrel, and a spiral spring, F2, which is applied to the barrel and pintle in the usual manner for adjusting properly the tension of the spring. The pintle F is connected by an arm, F, at its upper end with an arm, F", that is pivoted to the arm F3 and toixed cars of the door-frame, as shown clearly in Figs. l and 5.
The closing device forms no part of my invention, as the same is well known and has been used in connection with door-checks heretofore, the new feature ofmy door-check being the hinge-connection of the same by the pivotrod with the adjustable bracket-arm of the door-frame, so that the cylinder is swung by the opening of the door from a position at an angle thereto into a position parallel to the door, as shown in Fig. 4, and from the latter position into its normal position when the door is closed. By thus arranging the cylinder so as to swing this bracket on a hinge of the door the air-cylinder is notin the way of the wall when the door is entirely opened, so that my improved pneumatic door-check can be applied to the door without interfering with the wall, as the fixed projecting cylinder of the door -checks heretofore in use.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-'- 1. The combination, with a door vhaving an ICO air-cylindei` open at one end and pivotally connected with said door and apivot-rod con-v meeting the door-casing with said aircylinder,
of a removable piston secured on the doorcasing and tting in the cylinder, a screw for adjusting the inclination of Said piston, and a spring acting on the door, substantially asset forth.
2. The combination, With a door, of an air- Io cylinder connected pivotally with the same7 a bracket applied to the door-casing, a bracket-
