- ABEL G. STILSON, OF COBLESKILL, NEW YORK.
COVER FOR POTS.
QPECIPIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,762, dated November 13, 1888.
Application filed January 17, 1888. Serial No. 261,010. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABEL G. STILSON, of Oobleskill, in the county of Schoharie, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Pots, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an expansion-cover for pets and other vessels that can be quickly and conveniently adjusted to different sizes of pets as required; and the invention consists of an expansible cover which is formed of adisk that is open from its center to one point of its circumference, the ends of said disk being made to overlap each other, the underlapping end being provided with a guide device for and with raised radial. ribs at the edge that are engaged by a locking-spring, the inner end of which is inserted into a central opening of the cover. The looped locking-spring is provided at the inner end with a fixed washer for covering the central opening of the cover, and at the outer end with a bent hook that engages the ribs of the underlapping end of the cover, said spring bearing against an upwardly-bent stop or abutment of the overlapping end of the cover.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view, Fig. 2 a side view, and Fig. 3 a vertical transverse section, on line am, Fig. 1, of my improved cxpansiblc cover for pets and other vessels.
Similar letters ol reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents in y improved cover, which is made from a diskshaped piece of sheet metal that is slitted radially from its center to one point of its circumference, so that the ends next adjoining the slit can be made to overlap each other on bending the disk into conical or convex shape, as shown in Fig. 3. The underlapping end of the disk-shaped cover A is provided with a wire guidebook, a, by which it is retained in contact with the overlapping end. The un derlapping end is further provided with radial ribs b b, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2, which are engaged byalooped locking-spring, B, the inner end, d, of which is inserted into a central opening, (1, of the cover A, while the outer hook-shaped end, 12, engages one of cap, f,which covers the central opening, d, of V the cover.
The locking-spring B may be readily detached from the cover for setting the cover to the proper size, and applied thereto by reinserting the inner end into the central hole of the cover and the outer hoolcshaped end in one of the ribs b in the underlapping end of the cover. The overlapping ends of the cover may also be locked together by the spring B without removing the same by simply taking hold of the cover at both sides of the ends, pushing the ends one over the other, and placing the hook-shaped end of the locking-spring into the required rib b, as shown in Fig. 2.
I am aware that expansible covers for pets formed of a radially-slitted disk of sheet metal, in which the overlapping ends are each provided with a handle and retained in contact by suitable means, have been used hereto fore, and I do not claim these features, broadly.
Having thus described my inventiomi claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of an eXpansible cover having overlapping ends, the underlapping end being provided with radial ribs at its circumference and the overlapping end with a stop or abutment at its edge, means for bolding the overlapping ends in contact with, each other, andalockingspring extending from the center of the cover to the edge and engaging the overlapping ends of the same, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of an expansible cover having overlapping ends, the underlapping end having radial ribs atits circumference and the overlapping end a stop or abutment at its edge, a' guide-hook for retaining the overlapping ends in contact with each other, and a locking-spring that is applied to a central opening of the cover and provided with a hook at the outer end for engaging one of the ribs of the underlapping end of the cover, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of an expansible cover having overlapping ends, the underlapping end being provided with radial ribs and the overlapping end with astop ,or abutmentat its edge, a guide-hook for keeping the overlapping ends in contact with each other, and a locking-spring the inner end of which is inserted into a central opening of the cover and provided with a washer, while the outer hookshaped end of the spring extends alongside of the abutment and engages one of the indentations of the underlapping end, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ABEL G. STILSON.
