Description

R. SOHMELING..
No. 392,692. Patented Nov. 18, 1888.
ROBERT SOHMELING, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SHOW=CASE FOR STREET DlSPLAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,692, dated November 13, 1888.
Application filed March 23, 1386. Serial No. 196.224. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT SOIIMELING, of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show-Gases for Street Display, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,that will enable others to make and use the'same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ofthis specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a means for lighting up the interior of a glass show-case in which articles of merchandise are exhibited, and relates more particularly to show-cases that are placed outside of buildings, so that the contents may be readily seen from the street.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the upper part of a showcase embodying my improved feature; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of an auxiliary top or cover, showing the arrangement of the lighting devices.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a show-case of a rectangular form, the sides, ends, and top proper being wholly of glass.
B is an auxiliary cap or cover of a semicir cular form placed on the top of the case, completely covering the glass top of the same, as illustrated in Fig. 1. This cover has no bottom, and is mere] y a shell composed of some suitable sheet metal, and providing sufficient space on the interior for arrangement of one or more lamps, 0, provided with reflectors G. Gas or other substance used for lighting is supplied through the pipe D, running from the building into the cover on the case, as shown in Fig. 2. When it is not convenient to make use of gas, the lighting may be done by means of an oil-lamp.
The metallic cap 13 is provided with a nun1- her of apertures, a, for the admission of air, and one or more escape-tubes, b. The door (I gives access to the interior, so that the lamps may be reached and properly cared for.
The sl1owcases used for street exhibits are usually of considerable depth and made to hold many different articles, which are arranged in accordance with the skill and taste of the exhibitor; but it is hardly possible to so arrange the articles as to bring the whole contents of the case to view, and more especially so in the night-time. Now, by means of the device herein set forth, the light is thrown down throughout the case and every article displayed to the view of the passer-by to the best advantage. The cap or cover is shown of a semicircular form; but any other shape may be used. This cap protects the top of the case from the efi'eets of atmospheric changes, and also prevents the glass top from being broken by anything that might drop down from above.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a show-case for street display, the combination, with a semicircular cap or top provided with a number of apertures, a, and the door (I, of the lamps O, the reflectors G, the supply-pipe D, and the escape-tubes b, allconstructed and arranged substantiali y as and for the purpose set forth.
