UNITED s'ra'ras GEORGE STEPHENSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DISPLAY LIGHT.
Application filed March 80, 1922. Serial No. 548,067.
To-aZZ whom it may concern: 1
Be it knownthat I, GEORGE E. STEPHEN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Lights, of which the followin is a description.
My invention re ates to an improvement in display lights, and more particularly to a combination display light and advertising sign adapted to'be used in showcases, windows, or any other suitable or convenient locations desired.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a light of the klnd described in which a portion of the light is used for illuminating the advertising matter arranged thereon.
- The, invention has among its other objects the production of a device of the kind described which is neat and attractive in ap- 1 peara-nce, simple, convenient, compact, du-
rable, reliable, efiicient and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable.
Another object of-myv invention is to provide a device of the kind described which is portable and easy to handle, so that it may be placed in any convenient positlon and changed from time to time, if so'desired.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled-in the art from the disclosures herein given.
, To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein vshown and described,
and more particularly pointed out in the Fig-5 is a. sectional view taken substantially'onthe limit-:5 of Fig, 2;
Fig.6 is a modlfied formslmilar to that shown ih Fig. 1, but with the light mounted adjacent the ceilin y V -Fig. 7 is a sectional view illustrating a modified form having a curved reflector therein, and
Fig. 8 illustrates another modified form having a plurality of sign-receiving windows therein.
In the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, t ere is represented a display light adapted to be used for lighting .up showcases, windows, or other suitable places, and comprises a casing or container,
referably of the form shown, wherein '1 indicates the bottom wall, 5-6 the top wall,-3 the rear wall and 4 the end walls. It will be noted that the casing is open entirely across the front thereof. The designations of front and rear walls are merely for the matter of convenience, be cause, as will be apparent from a full disclosure of the invention, the light may be hung or placed so that the relative desi nation's will be reversed, for example see igs. 6 and 8.
The top wall is parallel with thebottom wall for a distance, represented at 5, and thence diverges orflares outwardly therefrom toward the front side, as at 6, so that there is formed a tapered or flared chamber or opening within the casing. 'A partition 7 is arranged across the inside of thevwalls of the casing, as shown in the drawings said partition preferably having its edges flanged so as to lie against the walls of the casing and act as a, reinforcement therefor. Any form of fastening means may beused for securing the partition in place, as for in stance by solderin riveting or the like. The partition'divi es the casing into two compartments comprising a rear compartment 8, which is concealed, and a front com partment 9, in which: suitable lamps or lights 10 are adapted to be arranged. The wiring connections 11 are adapted to be arranged within the concealed compartment-8, and the partition performing the function of a panel to carry the wirin also'carrying one ormore sockets 12 space apart thereon in which the lamps 10 are adapted to be screwed. One of the end walls 4 is provided with an opening therethrough into the concealed compartment 8, into which the lead wires of the wiring circuit may be inserted.
Reinforcing means, as for instance a stiff wire 12, may be arranged about'the bounding edges of the open side of the casing, as
shown in the drawings, the edges of the casthe opening is out through the top wall 2,
the edges of said opening being bent back wardly upon themselves, as at 13. Guides, comprising channel-shaped members, are positioned at the opposite sides of said opening 13' to removably receive a translucent plate or window 15. The channels 14: are preferably secured in position by having one of their parallel legs secured in place between the wall of the casing and the turned-over edge 13, as shown more clearly in 'Fig. 4. Any suitable advertisement may be arranged or superimposed on the translucent plate 15, in any desired manner as for instance said advertisement may comprise a sheet 16 having cutout portion-s therein, through which the light may shine. Any other suitable type of advertisement may be arranged over the window 15 on either the inside or outside, either separate therefrom, or, if desired, said advertisement may be imprinted directly upon the plate 15, or formed many other suitable manner thereon.
It isobvious that when the lights are turned on, a portion of the rays will be directed against the. translucent plate 15, illuminating the advertisement, and that the rays will also be directed outwardly of the flared open side to illuminate the goods on display. Any suitable type of electrical means may be used in this device, as for instance a make-and-break flasher, colored lights or the like, as preferred.
The device may be mounted at any suitable point, as for instance upon the bottom "or floor 17 of the window or showcase toports lugs 18' are provided on the bottom wall of the casing of the showcase, so that there is an air space between the bottom wall 1 and the material of the supporting wall. In order to prevent the accidental. withdrawal of the plate 15 during the handling or carrying of the device, I have arran ed clips 20, or other suitable or equivalent astening means, to engage the edges of the plates, as shown.
In the modification shown in Fig. 7,,the device is similar'to that previously described, except that partition 19 is arcuate in cross-section to form a different type of reflector for the lamps 10. The surface of the partition 19 may be coated, silvered or polished, as desired, or there may be a separate reflector superimposed over the partition.
In the modification shown in Fig. 8, both the walls 1 and 2 have openings formed therein to receive the advertisements This type of device is particularly adapted for those showcase or the like, wherein the observer may view the goods on display from opposite sides of the case.
Having thus described my invention, it is,
obvious that various immaterial modifica- What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a sheet metal casing having an opening through one of its sides and having bounding edges of said opening bent back upon itself, channel members at the edges of said opening, each having one leg secured between the casing wall and said bent-back edge of the opening, and a window arranged to removably slide in said channels to cover said opening and adapted to have an advertisement superimposed thereon. I
2. In a device of the kind described and in" combination, a sheet metal casing having an opening through its side wall, the bounding" edges of said opening bent back u on themselves, channel members at said e ges, each having one leg secured between the casing wall and the bent-back edge of the opening, a window plate arranged to reniovably slide in said channels to cover said "opening and adapted to have an advertisement superimposed thereon, and means for preventing accidental withdrawal of said plate.
3. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a sheet metal casing having openings through a plurality of its 'side walls, the bounding edges of said openings bent back upon themselves, channel members at said edges, each having one leg se cured between the casing wall and the bentback edges of the openings,"window plates removably slidable in said channels to cover said openings and adapted to have an advertisement superimposed thereon, means signed my name in the presence of two subfor preventing accidental withdrawal of said scribing witnesses. plates, and means for lighting the interior of said casing, whereby the light will be di- GEORGE STEPHENSON 5 reoted against said window plates to illnmi- Witnesses: nate said advertisement. ROY W. HILL,
In testimony whereof, I have hereun RUTH M. Ermmm.
