Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. STRONG, OF BUFFALO, NEI/V YORK.
IMPROVEMEN'I IN MARKING-ERAN DS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,261, dated July 14, 1863.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEoRGE H. STRONG, ot' Buit-alo, in Erie county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Branding-Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of my method of constructing the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a sectional view cut crosswise. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the implement complete, and Fig. 3 is a front view ofthe same.
The nature of my invention consists in so arranging lthe parts that they may be slid together (in the form of a dovetail) and then made secure by the handle. which is screwed through the top piece and against a piece. of iron which rests upon the letters and within the part containing said letters, thus holding them rmly together without the aid of eXtra screws. They are easier titted together and cost less to manufacture.
I construct my brand of cast-iron, that being the cheapest material. The letters are movable and made of copper or brass.
InFig.1Arepresents part of the handle; B, the screw which screws into the upper part ot' the brand, which partis marked C. `I is the lower part; F, the type; E, a piece which lies upon the type.
Fig. 1 shows the way in which the type or letters are placed in the lower part, I; also, the manner in which they are secured and held fast by screwing the bottom of the handle against the piece E.
Fig. 2 shows a side view of the several parts.
The saine letters representthe several parts in the Figs. l, 2, and 3.
G and H represent two projections which clasp over the corners or ends of the part I and hold it together in the form of a dovetail, as is fully shown by the drawings.
Fig. 3 is a front view showing the way in which the pirces are slid apart, when found necessary to taire oft' (or out) theletters orput them in.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secnle by Letters Patent, is
Making the brand in two pieces when one of the pieces is provided with langes or proiections between which the other piece may be slid and then held fast by screwingin the handle, as herein substantially set forth and described.
Witnesses: GEORGE II. STRONG.
JAMES SANGs'rER, HUGHSANGSTER.
