P. MOFADDEN.
CHECK HOOK.
No. 391,910. Patented Oct. 80, 1888.
v j V /////Ji\\\\\\\\\\\ I- I I I Uwrrn STATES PATENr l Fl ClEQ PATRICK MOFADDEN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHECK-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,910, dated October 30, 1888.
Application filed January 20, 1888. Serial No. 261,406.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PATRICK MOFADDEN, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness- Hooks and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompa' nyingdrawiugs, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in harness-trimmings, and more particularly to harness-hooks especially adapted for use in connection with check-reins.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, efficient, and durable harness-hook of the class wherein the hook portion is removably connected to the base; and my invention consists in certain novel features of construe tion and combinations of parts, more fully described hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a detached view, inside elevation, of the hook and its pedestal; Fig. 2, a detached top plan view of the base or supporting plate; Fig. 3, a detached top plan view of the locking'plate or key; Fig. 4:, a-longitudinal vertical section of the device, showing the parts assembled; Fig. 5, a detail bottom view of the pedestal of the hook; Fig. 6, a vertical crosssection of the device, and Fig. 7 a side elevation of the supporting-plate and locking-plate.
In the drawings, the reference-letter A indicates a hook provided with the usual opening, a, for the passage of a strap or the like.
The hook is supported by a pedestal, 13, se cured to its lower end or formed integral with the same, and the pedestal is preferably oblong in shape, and is provided upon its lower side with a dovetailed base or projection, b, which is wedge-shaped in form, (see Fig. 5,) thedovetailcd base narrowing toward the front or closed side of the hook, so that when strain is exerted in that direction upon the hook the (No model.)
base will become more firmly wedged in posi tion.
A base or bed plate, G, adapted to be secured to a harness-saddle, preferably upon the outside of the leather covering of the same, forms the base or support for the removable hook, and said plate is preferably elongated or oblong in shape and of sufficient thickness to receive in its upper face a central longitudinal dovetailed groove, (1, extending about half way through the thickness of the plate, and the sides of which taper inwardly toward each other and the front end of the plate, making the groove wedge-shaped in form. One or more beveled apertures or holes, 0', extend from the bottom of the dovetailed groove through the bed-plate, and are adapted to receive the rivets or bolts 0 so that their heads will lie flush with or beneath the bot tom surface of the groove, and the belts or rivets are adapted to firmly secure the bedplate to a harness-saddle. The groove (1 does not extend to the front end or edge of the bedplate, and at its front or narrow end a transverse opening, d, extends completely through the plate, and the lower front side of said opening is provided with a recess, (1, for the purpose hereinafter set forth. The groove extends to and opens through the rear edge of the bedplate, so that the dovetailed portion of the hook-pedestal can be readily inserted into the same from the rear end of the plate, and a crupper loop or projection, c, is formed preferablyintegral with the bed-plate, and extends rearwardly from the rear edge of the same, and said loop or projection is preferably of such thickness that its under face will be flush with the under face of the bed-plate, while its upper face falls in about the same horizontal plane with the bottom of the dovetailed groove tion with a forwardly-projecting stay or lug, e, which extends through the opening at the forward end of the groove in the base plate, and enters the recess in the lower portion of one edge of the same when the hook is in posi' tion on the base-plate, thus firmly bracing the hook in position against lateral play or upward movement. The dovetailed base or projection upon the lower side of the hook-pedestal does not extend to the end of the pedestal,
(see Fig. 1,) but leaves a projecting flange or wing, it.
' The dovetailed portion of the hook-pedestal is held removably locked in the groove of the bed-plate by a locking-plate or key, E, which is adapted to fit upon the crupper loop or projection, with its upper face preferably flush, or nearly so, with the upper face of the bedplate, and said locking-plate is of a form to correspond to and register with the crupper-- loop, and is preferably of such contour and thickness that when placed in position upon the reduced crupper-loop its edges will be flush with the edges of the loop and its upper face about flush with the upper face of the bed-plate, thus making the combined thickness of the lockingplate and crupper-loop about equal to the thickness of the bed-plate, thereby giving the device a more finished and tasty appearance. At its inner end the looking-plate is provided with the centrally-1m cated dovetailed projecting tongue 0', adapted to extend into the rear open end of the dovetailed groove beneath the projecting flange h of the hook-pedestal, and bear against the rear end of the dovetailed portion of the hookpedestal and hold the hook firmly against longitudinal play or movement, and upon each side of the projecting tongue the shoulders f f are formed, which bear against the edges or shoulders f f of the bed-plate and upon each side of the open end of the groove in the same and above the crupper-loop.
The crupper-loop and locking-plate are each provided with a hole or aperture, 9, which are adapted'to register when the parts are assembled, and the parts are held rigidly but detachably locked together by a locking-pin, j, passing through the registering apertures g.
It will be observed that the bottom of the dovetailed base passes freely over the heads of the bolts or rivets which secure the baseplate in position upon the harness. In placing the device in operative position the baseplate is secured to the harness by the bolts or rivets; the hook is then secured in the dovetailed groove, and is removably locked in the same by the locking-plate, and the lockingplate is held in position by the locking-pin. Thus it will be seen that the hook can be quickly and easily detached from the baseplate without going to the labor and trouble of taking the base-plate from the harness.
It is clearly evident that numerous slight changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the construction herein set forth, but consider myself entitled to all such slight changes.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
