ADJUSTABLE LID FOR EGG CASES. No. 391,766. Patented Oct. 23. 1888.

0 I I I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE \V. TURNER, OE JASPER, MISSOURI.
ADJUSTABLE LlD FOR EGG-CASES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,766, dated October 23, 1888.
Application filed May 1888. Serial No. 275,688. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. TURNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jasper, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Lids for Egg-Gases, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to cell-cases; and it consists of an adjustable lid for an egg-case, constructed and operating as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box provided with my adjustable lid, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectiou'of the same.
The box or crate A may be of any desired shape or dimensions, the one shown being such as is ordinarily used for transporting eggs or other fragile or tender articles. The contents of these boxes are usually packed in cell-cases 3, which are then placed in a tier in the box A, one above the other. A sheet, a, of pasteboard, wood, or the like, is laid upon each cellcase before the next one is put into the box. In the opposite sides of the box are formed holes D, arranged in a vertical row. A lid, K, fits inside the walls of the box A, and as the latter are parallel the lid can be slid down to any point within the box. Along two opposite edges of the lid are fastened cleats L, through each of which passes a bolt, M, normally thrown outward by a spring,N. These bolts are adapted to engage with the holes D in the sides of the box and hold the lid at any desired height in the box. The holes are so arranged that whenthe lid K rests upon a cell- 0 case B the spring-bolts will enter the corre sponding set of holes and retain the lid in place.
The operation of my device is as follows: The cell-cases B are packed in the box A one above the other, with the sheets 0 interposed between them. When the desired number have been put in, thelid Kis placed upon the uppermost one and the spring-bolts M are engaged with the set of holes that correspond with that position of the lid. In this condition the box can be shipped, the lid holding the cell-cases firmly. If all the contents of the cell-eases should not be disposed of, and it should be desired to ship the remainder back home or to some other market, the empty cases can be removed, the lid K dropped down upon those that are left, and locked in the holes D corresponding with its new position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A box containing a tier of cell-cases having its sides provided with a series of holes corresponding with the successive cell-cases, and a lid movable within the box and carrying spring-bolts to engage with said holes and hold the lid upon the uppermost cell-case, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the box A, having the holes D, of the cell-cases B, the interposed sheets a, the lid K, provided with the cleats L, and the spring-bolts M, passing through the cleats L and engaging with the holes D, substantially as set forth.
\Vitness my hand this 23d day of April, 1888.
GEORGE WV. TURNER.
In presence of J. T. WALLOR, G. G. DURAN.
