IMPROVEMENT IN EGG-CARRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,807, dated July 15, 1873 application filed t May '24, 1873.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. BEAM, of Galifornia, in the county of Moniteau and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Egg-Package, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a strong Wood box in ten compartments, in which are, say, four series or tiers of paper cells adapted to hold an egg upright, on the large end, the cells being formed of a paper cylinder and pasted or otherwise fastened together at the sides. Between each tier of the cells, also between the upper and lower tiers and the box-sides, are cushions to soften the shocks. The rows of cells along the sides of each tier are protected from the shocks against the side walls by paper or other springs. The sides of the box are provided with projections, which prevent the box from resting on them, so that the eggs are secured against Vlying on the sides while in transit. Some of the end projections ofthe case constitute handles for handling it.
The box is made as Wide as to contain as many cells as it will be safe to arrangein one compartment,on account of the crushing force ou the sides when the box happens to be tilted, and is to be as long in the other direction to obtain a package for holding as large a quantity as practicable; and the aforesaid parti-` tion is arranged at the middle as a protection against this crushing eiect.

O and D represent, respectively, top and bottom projections of the ends of the box, which are preferably of segmental form, the better to prevent the box resting thereon.V rEhe projections are applied to the sides or ends of the box, or to both, as desired. The projections D may be used as handles in lifting the box. E E are staples or loops, with which the hooks of the cover engage when the latter is closed. F represents tiers of superimposed paper cells, constructed of cylinders and fastened together at the sides, as shown in Fig. 2, also having the paper or other springs G attached to the outer cells, as shown, to protect them from shocks against the sides of the box. These cells are of suitable size and length for containing one egg each, and holding it erect on one end. Each tier is separated by a thin board or strong paper sheet, J, to close the ends of the cells, and the cushion K is placed between the tiers, or they may be sufficiently cushioned between the top and bottom tiers and the boxsides, if preferred.
The cells are removable at will for packing and unpacking. They are constructed so that in the packing they fill the case nicely, so that they do not move except as the case moves.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y 1. A packing-box for eggs, having projections O D, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The tiers F of cells provided with springs G at the sides, and arranged with .the case and with the separating plates and cushions, substantially as specified.
