Beit known that I, PHAREs M. Misl-ILER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hagerstown, in the count-y of Washington and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fences; and Ido hereby declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.

This invention has relation toimprovements in portable fences; and it consists inthe novel construction and arrangement of the same, all as will be hereinafter fully explained, and pointed out in the appended claim.

The annexed drawings,to whichreference is made, fully illustrate Inyinventiomin which- Figure l represents a perspective view of my fence, and Fig. 2 is a detail viewof the same.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A A designate two panels of the fence,each being constructed alike. The same consists of the pickets a, which are inclined, as shown, an upper rail, a lower rail, and an inclined or diagonal brace,b.

The inclined pickets of the fence are connected to one another and braced in the following manner: It will be seen that the upper rail, a, and lower rail, b', as well as the diagonal brace, is formed of wire, and at each end of the section or panel is provided a loop, c, formed in the ends of the upper and lower rails, which latter are provided with eyes d, through which project the pickets. In forming these eyes for the pickets I provide means whereby the wire is prevented from breaking This is accomplished by forming each alternate eye from the opposite line-wire, there being two wires for each rail ruiming parallel to one another, and the brace-wires are constructed in a similar manner, except that the two opposite ends thereof have no loops, but are simply fastened to the two end pickets of the panel. It will be seen that in connecting the sections of the fence to one another the eyes in the rails are brought together, one over the other, as shown, and a key or lockingpicket,

e, is passed through the upper eyes or loops and through the lower loops, thus presenting, when so locked,a continuous upper and lower rail for the fence.

In combination with my improved fence, I use a portable post, B, which consists of the transverse base-barjian upright or post,g,and a bracebar, It. between each coupling portion or the loops of each section of the fence, and by means of a wire, z', (the end of which being attached to a stake, c', in the gro und,) I tie the panels thereto, by wrapping said wire around the post, taking in at each wrap a picket until all pickets adjacent to the post are tied thereto, when the free end of this tie-wire is fastened or tied securely. .It will be further observed that the posts support each end of everypanel,and the diagonal brace-wires strengthen and firmly brace each panel, and by so constructing a fence the same is prevented from sagging, and any kind of pickets may be used, such as barrel-staves, hoop-poles, or small poles, round pieces of timber, or square. Should the latter be employed, the corners thereof should be outward in order to deflect the wind. It is simple in construction, durable, and at the same time cheap to manufacture or construct.

In a portable fence, the combination, with the pickets and supporting-posts,ofthe upper and lower rails consisting ofthe parallel wires, each provided at intervals with the eyesd, the opposite ends thereof formed into loops c, the former adapted to receive the pickets and the latter the key or fastening-picket e, wherebyv the panels are locked to one another, the bracewire constructed as described,and the tie wire adapted for holding the fence to the post, the whole combined and arranged as shown and described.
