SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,405, dated October 23, 1888.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHRISTIAN DIBBERN and RUDOLPH O. KRiieER, both citizens of the United States. and residents of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have jointly invented new and useful Improve ments in Fastening Devices for Storm or Double Windows,&c.,of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices for storm-window sashes and similar structures, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of the Windowframe, showing the storm -window sash as secured by means of our improved fastening device. Fig. 2 represents a cross-section on the line A B. (Shown in Fig. 1.) Fig. 3 represents a rear view of the lock that is secured to the window-frame or its bead. Fig. 4. represents a vertical section of said lock on the line C D in Fig. 3, showing the hooked 1ever as closed when not in use. Fig. 5 represents a top view of said lock, showing its hooked lover or catch as swung outward in working position; and Fig. 6 represents a cross-section on theline E F in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 represents a front view of the screw-threaded nut that is adapted to be secured to the sash of the stornrwindow or similar structure, and Fig. 8 represents a cross section on the line G H. (Shown in Fig. 7.)

0 represents the sash of a storm-window or other structure that is to be secured to the win dow-frame in such a manner as to be easily detached therefrom whenever so desired.
Ourimproved fastening device is constructed as follows: To the storm-window sash c is socured in a suitable manner the flanged nut (Z, which latter is preferably secured to the in side of said sash o, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2;
but this is not essential, as it may to equal advantage be arranged on the outside of said sash or let in in its side, as may be most practical and convenient, according to the form or con- 5 5 struction of the window or other structure for which the fastening device may be used without departing from the essence of our invention. The nut d is internally screw-threaded for the reception of the headed screw (2, as shown in Figs. 2, 7, and 8. To the inside of the window-frame or its bead ais secured the lock, which is composed of the face-plate e, having inwardly-projecting side pieces, 6 e, between which is hinged on the pinfthe hooked lever 6 f, having near its free end a notch or cutaway portion, f, adapted to receive the fasteningscrew (1 when said hooked lever is swung outward, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 5, and 6. The upper ends of the side pieces, e e, are bent inward at thecorners, as shown at c e in Figs.
1, 3, 4, 5, and 6, so as to serve as springs to hold the hooked lever f with a proper frictional resistance between the side pieces, 6 a, when said lever is swung outward, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 5, and 6. The leverf is provided in its outer end with a notch or recess, f, to enable it to be picked by hand or by a suitable tool when in the closed position, (shown in Fig. 4), preparatory to swinging it outward in work ing position. (Shown in Figs. 1, 2, 5, and 6.) According to the size of the storm-window sash that is used, any desired number of the improved fastening devices may be employed.
To use the invention, after the plate e, with its sides e e and hooked lever-f, has been secured to the window-frame a or its bead a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the nut d has been secured to the inside or outside of the storm window 0, when it is desired to secure the lato ter to the window-frame or its connections, we first remove the screw d and raise or lower the sashes b b accordingly. The hooked lever f is then swung outward to the position shown in Figs. 1, 2, 5, and 6, after which the screw dis 5 screwed into the nut (Z, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and made to pass through the notch or cutaway portion f on the leverf, thus holding the storm-window sash c firmly in position.
\Vheu it is desired to remove the storm-win- 10o dow sash c, it is only necessary to unscrew the screw dfrom the nut d and to swing the levcrf into the case 6 e e to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4, after which the storm-window sash c is removed and the screw (1 screwed into the nut d, so as to bein place when the stormwindow sash c is to be used again, thus providing a ready means for connecting and securing storm window sashes to the window frame whenever it is desired so to do. When the lever f is locked in position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the screw d prevents it from swinging downward, and the upper portion of the face-plate e prevents the said lever from being swung upward, thus holding said lever in a locked position as long as the screw d is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The invention is very simple in construction, can be applied to any window of ordinary construction, and when attached to the parts mentioned it is always ready for use, and by its means the storm-window sash can be readily secured in place by any unskilled person without the use of tools, except an ordinary screwdriver.
Having thus fully described the nature,construction, and operation of our invention, we wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim 1. The herein-described device for securing storm-window sashes to window-frames, con sisting of the case 0 e e, secured to the window frame or casing, and having the hooked lever f f pivoted to it, as described, combined with the nut d on the storm-window sash c, and the headed screw d, arranged to pass through the notch orrecess f on the said lever f, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The stationary case 6 e e, secured to the window frame or casing and having its upper corners, c e,.bent inward, as described, and havingpivoted to it thehooked leverff, combined with the nut d on the stornrwindow sash c, and the headed fastening-screw d, adapted to pass through the notch or recessf" on the pivoted lever f, and to be secured to the nut d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
