UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM CARROLL AND CHARLES A. HILL, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
DOUBLE CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION" forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,751, dated October 9, 1888.
Application filed December 31,1887. Serial No.259,486.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM CARROLL and CHARLES A. HILL, both of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Double Clamp, ofwhieh the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to a clamp such as is used in connection with a stove-block.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved double clamp for securely holding the doors of stoves in place on the stove casing while fitting on the hinges, pintles, &C.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations ofthe same,as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure l is a side elevation ofa stove, showing the improvement applied; and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan View of the improvement.
The improved double clamp A is provided with a casing, B, in which are held the rods C and D, each extending at one end through one end 'of the casing B. On theinner ends of the rods C and D are secured the washers E and E, on which rest the inner ends of the springs F and F, coiled around the rods C and D, respectively, their other ends resting on the insides ofthe respective ends of the casing B. The
springs F and F have thetendency to move the rodsCand D inward; but the inward movement of thesaid rodsislimited by thestop-pinsG and C, respectively, secured to the casing B.
On the outer ends of the rods C and D are secured thejaws H and I, provided on their inner sides with teeth J and J. Opposite the jaws H and I on the rods C and I) are formed the handlesKand K,for conveniently handling the double clamp and the respective jaws H and I. l
The double clampAis used as illustrated in Fig. 1-that is, one jaw, H, fits over the respective door L of the stove-casing N, and the casing B passes crosswise over one side of the (No model.)
stove, while the other jaw, I, presses against the opposite side of the stove to that on which the respective door L is located. In order to place the double clamp in this position, it is necessary that the operator should take hold of the handles K and K and press the rods C and D outward from the casing B until one jaw, H, engages the door L,and the other jaw, I, rests against the opposite side of the stovecasing. The springs F and F now press the rods 0 and D inward, so that the teeth J and J of the jaws H and I are pressed tightly against the respective doors on the side of the stove, thus holding the doors in place for the operator to work on-thatis, for fitting on the hinges, pintles, 85c. After the doors are fitted on the stove-casingthe operator takes hold of thehandles K and K, again presses them outward slightly, and is then enabled to remove the double clamp A from the stove.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and de ire to secure by Let ters Patent 1. In a double clamp, the combination, with a casing, of rods extending into the casing through its ends, a washer held on the inner end of each of said rods, aspring coiled on the inner end of each of said rods and held in place by the said washer, a jaw on the outer end of each of the said rods, and pins projecting inward from the said casing to limit the inward movement of the said rods, substantially as Shown and described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a double clamp consisting of the tubular casing B, having internal projections, G G, and aper turesin its ends, rods C I), extending through said end apertures and formed with jaws H I and handles K K at their outer ends, and the coiled springs held on the rods within the easing and bearingagainst the ends thereof, substantially as set forth.

Correction in Letters Patent No. 390,751.
It is hereby certified that Letters Patent No. 390,751, granted October 9, 1888, upon the application of William'Carroll and Charles A. Hill, of Columbus, Ohio, for an improvement in Double-Clamps were erroneously issued to said inventors, that said Letters Patent should have been issued to said Carroll, Amelia C. Oldham, and John Callam, said Carroll, Oldham, and Callam being owners, by assignment, of one-third each, of said invention, and that the Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Ofiice.
Signed, countersigned, and sealed this 11th day of December, A. D. 1888.
