sweetener,
erncrrrcarron forming pm of Leners Patent No. 390,192, dated september, as, lace;
` Application tiled .Tune 4, iSS. Serial No. 275,668. (No model.) i
To mit whom it maycncerm 13e it known that I, CHARLES H. Snirrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Alarms, of which the following is n specifica-tion.
The object of this invention is to construct an clarin foriiro purposes, consisting of a gong, a train of gearing carrying c hammer, and a fusible alloy hoiding the genring in check u'ntil released byheat, when'thealarni Will sound, giving notice of the rise in the temperature.
in the accompanying drawings,lFignre l'is a plan view of an clarin embodying my ineen tion. Fig. 2 is c plan view oi' the alarm with the gong removed. Fig. 3 is n vertical seetion through the gong and base-plate on dotted line a, Fig. 1.
-The'hase-plate of my improved irc-alar1n is of circular form, having its front face, 1, recessed to contain the train ol gearing for aetnotingthe belldmmmer. The back face, 2, is
nlso recessed to permit of the attachment ofv thewinding-key. Agong, 3, of suitable size, is supported over the front recess of the baseplatehy a center stud-shalt, 4, secured to the base-plate and having a screw-thread eonnec tion with the gong.
The train of gearing employed in the con struction of the alarm may be of any of the iznown varieties adapted for the purpose. In
this instance it consists in a1nainspring,5, having e. gear-connection 1with the escape-Wheel c, and a pallet, 7 supported in asnitable frame composed ol' upper plate, 8, and lower plate, 9, 'A hammer, 10, is connected to the shaft 1l, carrying the pallet, and moves therewith. A lever-arri), 12, projects from the shaft 11, and extends'fthronghan elongated opening, 1 3, in the sido Wall of the base-plate. A stud, ilfi, projects freni the loose-plate, and o link, 1o, of fusible-alley, connects the stud 14. with the projectinicr end of the lever-arm 12 in the manner shown, By this construction of a drealarni the winding of the spring is effected by a key applied to the shaft 16, projecting into the bottom reecsss of the baseplate. liefore the winding is commenced the fusible link 15 is placed in position'on the arms 12 and 14, 5o when the winding'nniy be completed. The y alarm is then placed in position at a point where fire is most liable to occur, and when the temperature rises to the nieltingpoint of the alloy the arm 12 of the genrtrain will be released, and the action of the spring will canse the hell-harnnierto vibrate and strike the gong, thereby giving notice of' the rise in temperature. It is obvious that there nre various other methods of releasing the geartrain than by ra link of'fnsible alloy, and therefore I do'not wish te limit myself to the devices herein'shown and described so long as the alarm is released by the action of heet in n. manner substantially as herein shown and described.
I claim ns my invention- 1. A' fire-alarm consisting of a base, a geartrain supported thereon, an arm connected with the gear-train and proj eeting through the bose, and a vfusible alloy in direct contact with said arm for retaining itin its normal posi* tion, whereby upon the melting of said alloy 1 when exposed to heat the arin is icleosed,which thereby sets the gear in motion to sound the alarnnsnbstanticlly as set forth.
2. A lirenlnrm consisting of a base, a geen train supported thereon, an arm fixed to and projecting from said Ybase, nn srinoonnecte with the gear-train, and a fusible alloy conmeeting and in direct contact with said arms, 8o suhstcntially'as set forth. p
3. A lire-clarin consisting of a base', a geartrain supported thereon, an arm fixed to and projecting from said base, an arm connected with the geartrain,and a fusible link connect- 85 ing seid arms, substantially as set forth.
