UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
JAMES A. LAWSON, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COOKlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,967. dated June 23, 1863.
To aZZ wh am it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES A. LAWSON, of the city of Troy, county of Rensselaer, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cooking-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference bein g hereby had to the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification.
Like letters represent and refer to like or corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a section crosswise the stove through the fire-grate and ash drawer. Fig. 2 is a cross-section showing the front side of the drawer. Fig. 3 shows the front end of the ash-drawer when used with a door on the stove. Fig. 4 shows the adjustable end of the ash-drawer when no door is used. Fig. 5 is a vertical section lengthwise the stove. Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the ash-drawer and its arrangement in the stove. Fig. 7 shows the adjustable end of the ash-pan drawer, and more fully described hereinafter.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of an ash-pan drawer, in combination with a door on the side of the stove next adjoining the oven-doors, and with a hopper below the fire-grate, substantially as hereinafter described and set forth.
It also consists in an adjustable en d attached to the ash-pan drawer, so that the said drawer may be tightly inclosed in and removed from the stove without the aid and inconvenience of a door.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my said invention or improvements, I will here proceed to describe the construction thereof, together with its operation, which is as follows, to wit:
I construct an opening in the front side of any cooking-stove, so as to receive the ashpan drawer D, Figs. 5 and 6, which opening may be closed by means of a common door, or by means of the adjustable drawer-end E, Figs. 2, 4, and 7. I construct the said adjustable end for ash-pan drawers of any size sufficient to cover closely the opening or space on the front side of the stove through which the ash-pan drawer passes into the stove to receive ashes as the same fall from the fire-grate above. This endE is made of cast-iron, and is attached to the sides or end of the ash-pan drawer by means of the connecting-bars F, Figs. 2 and 7. At each end of this bar there is a joint, like F same figures, which are for the purpose of allowing the said end plate, E, to adjust or conform to the side of the stove, and be fastened thereto, as seen at U, Fig. 4. By raising this end plate up by means of the handle H, Fig. 4, it will become disengaged from the side of the stove, so that by the same handle the ash-pan drawer may be removed from the stove for any required purpose. The said connecting-bars may be firmly fastened to the sides of the ash-pan drawer, in which case there need be but one joint, F. This adjustable end will fit the side of the stove as well as any door can be made to fit, and is more convenient. When a door is used, the ash-pan drawer will appear as seen at Figs. 1, 3, and 6. Over the said ash-pan drawer, and between the same and the fire-grate, I construct the hopper O 0, Figs. 1,2,5, and 6, which is for the purpose of receiving and directing the ashes or other material falling from the fire-grate into the said ash-pan drawer, so
that the same may be removed from the stove,
by means of the said ash-pan drawer, in the manner aforesaid. All the ashes and other material will thus be thrown into the said ashpan drawer, which, being thus closed tightly therein, as aforesaid, will permit no ashes or dust to escape therefrom into the room when used while shaking or dumping the fire-grate. This hopper is made of cast-iron in a separate part, or it may be attached permanently to the other parts of the stove. Its size will depend upon the size of the stove and the angle and distance between the ash-pan drawer and the firegrate, and it may be on any angle desired. The said ashpan drawer may be of any capacity desired. It is only in part directly under the fire-chamber or fire-grate, the other and remaining part thereof being directly under the hearth of the stove in front of the oven. The front end of the stove next to the said ash-pan drawer is entirely closed. The stove-hearth may then project over and forward of said front end plate for greater convenience.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my said invention and improvements, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The employment of the ash-pan drawer D, in combination with the hopper C 0, iii In testimony whereof I have, on this 16th the manner substantially as herein described day of April, 1863, hereto set my hand.
and set forth.
2. The adjustable end E, arranged and coin- LAWSON" bined with the ash-pan drawer D, substan- \Vitnesses tiitlly as and for the purposes herein described MARCUS P. NORTON, and set forth. U. R. ING-ALLS.
