MACHINE FOR MAKING SHEET METAL LATHING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 388,866, dated September 4, 1888.
Application filed July 16, 1887. Serial No. 244,519. (No model.)
quired for lathing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in machines for punching and shearing sheet metal; and it consists in the combination of r 5 devices hereinafter described.
end elevation of the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of a punching and shearing machine embodying myimprovcments. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of thesame. Fig. 3 is an Fig. 4 is a detail elevation of one side or standardof the frame. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail sectional views of one pair of the rolls, showing the punches and shears attached to one of said rolls. Fig. 7 5 gives detail views of the punches, and Fig. 8
gives similar views of the shears.
A represents the sides of the frame, which are of the form here shown, are provided at their lower corners with supporting-feet B,
and in said sides are secured bearings O, D,
and E. The feet- 13 are bolted to a base-plate, F, and a pair of longitudinal bars, G, connect the upper edges of the sides.
H I represent two pairs of rolls, which are arranged one above the other and have their shafts jonrnaled in the bearings C D, respectively. The rolls H are each provided with a spur-wheel, K, and the rolls I have spurwhecls L, of the same size as wheels K and meshing therewith, thereby gearing the upper rolls, H, to the lower rolls, I, in pairs. Each upper roll, H, has a series of threaded openings, M, arranged in a straight longitudinal line, and is further provided with annular grooves N, which may be either straight and at right angles to the axes of the rolls or angular and arranged obliquely to the axes of the rolls, as shown in Fig. 2. In the said grooves N are secured annular cutters or shears O, and in the openings M are screwed the inner ends of punches IP. The said outters and punches project beyond the faces of rolls H, and are adapted to enter countersunk recesses R- S, respectively, in the faces of rolls I. The said rolls are hollow, and are prefera- WV represents a guiding-apron, which is ar' ranged in a longitudinal plane on a level with the proximate faces of the pair of rolls, and Y represents a cover to said apron. The apron and cover are preferably made of boileriron to secure sufficient strength and rigidity, and are supported and maintained in position by suitable standards, X, as shown.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The sheet metal to he punched and sheared is fed between the first pair of rolls, and as the same rotate their punches P punch holes in the sheet metal when they register with the openings R, and,the punches being somewhat smaller in diameter than the said openings, a boss is formed around each punched hole. The cutters O and countersunk grooves or recesses S cause the sheet metal to be cut or sheared into strips of suitable width, according to the points on the rolls at which the cuttors are located. As the sheets of metal travel between the first pair of rolls and are forced rearward thereby, they come in contact with the guideapron W and cover Y, which direct said sheets between the second pair of rolls, as will be readily understood. The function of the said second pair of rolls is to unite the edges of the sheared and punched sheets by clinching the same as the said sheets pass between them.
Having thus dcscribcd my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the rcvoluhie rolls H I, having the projecting punches or cutters (or both) and the countersunk openings and eesses or grooves on their opposing faces, the
gears K L, connecting said rolls together in pairs, and the driving-shaft T,having the gearwheel V, meshing with and connecting the gears L, for the purpose set forth, substantiall y as described.
4. The combination of the pairs of rolls geared together and having the projecting punches or cutters (or both) and the count-ersunk openings or recesses on their opposing proximate faces, and the guidingapron \V,arranged between the said pairs of rolls, substantialiy' as described ELTSHA I-IAWEs.
