SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,700, dated August 28, 1888 Application filed June 7, 1888. Serial NoA 276,372. (No model.)

Be it known'that I, THOMAs MANAHAN, a citizen of the United States. residing at New York, in the county andA State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in SheathingP-aper, of which the following is a specication.

This invention relates to sheathing andy lines C, arranged at uniform distances apart,

their distances apart being greater or less, as may be desired in any particular case. The lines may be of any color which is desired or is suitable for thepurpose; but I prefer a color for the lines differing from the color of the body of the paper, so as to give prominence to the lines and make them easily discernible to the Workman. These lines are useful as guide-lines to carpenters and builders by guiding them in driving nails to fasten the sheathing in straightlines along the beams, timbers, and joists over and upon which the sheathing is applied and used, and which the sheathing so covers and excludes from view as to require the carpenter,when applying the plain sheathing heretofore employed, to find and trace the beams and joists by feeling on the surface of the paper for, and so guessing, their direction and location. This difficulty the guide-lines upon the surface ofthe sheathing Obviate, for by placing the guide-lines at the end of the timbers or beams a straight course is directed by the lines, thus enabling the carpenter to follow the timbers and beams by aid of the lines and to drive his nails straight along the same. The guide-lines being straight,the carpenter in laying the sheathing is enabled to ing placed ori" a roof, its guiding-lines affording to the carpenter unerring instructions where to drive the fasteningnails, thus obviously enabling him even to drive the nails into the rafters by following the guide-lines ofthe sheathing, although the rafters are concealed by the roofing-boards.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Building and sheathing paper whose surface is provided with nail-guide lines C, substantially as and for the purpose described.
