UNITED STATES PATENT @ENCEg EMIL SEVERIN, OF AURORA, INDIANA.
METALLIC ROOFING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,085, dated April 17, 1883.
' Application filed November 20, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom 4it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL SEVERIN, of Aurora, Dearborn county, Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Slating, ot' which the following is a specification.
My invention is designed to enable the inanufacture out of tinned iron (tin-plate) or other sheet metal a roof-covering that will answer all the useful purposes ot' slating at much less expense.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a portion of a roof partly covered with my metallic slating.7 Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same in direction ot' the water-shed. Fig. 3 represents an under side view of one of the tiles or slates detached.
A may represent a part ot' an ordinary roofsheathing.
B are my metallic tiles or slates, preferably of square or approximately square form, two contiguous edges being bent under to form lips (l, and the other two edges being bent upward, backward, and again forward into an S form, making lips D, which have holes d for the fastening-nails E. Before bending, the corners of the plate are trimmed to produce the oblique terminations F. It will be seen that each line ot' nail-holes is completely hid,- den and protected by the superimposed tier of slating, so as to produce a completely water-proof' covering and a finished and sightly appearance.
rIhe plates may be painted or enameled in different tin ts, in imitation of slates or tiles, so as to produce a very ornamental appearance.
For the upper and the lower tiers half-tiles are used, such as would be produced by separation at the dotted line in Fig. 3.
I claim as a new a1 ticle of manufacture-+- The metallic slate o r tile B,having its cor- EMIL SEVERIN.
